Jay Gardens Preview Tours Begin This Sunday!

Starting this Sunday, the Historic Jay Gardens, reimagined by award-winning landscape architect Thomas Woltz and the team of Nelson Byrd Woltz, will be open for public preview tours every week at the following times:

Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Enjoy docent-led tours or stroll through on your own! Groups of ten or more are requested to pre-register by emailing Lucia Maestro at hortdirector.jhc@gmail.com.

This month the gardens were named one of New York Cottages & Gardens magazine's 10 Must-Visit "Home-Grown Beauties."

"Putin's World" with Russia Scholar Angela Stent

March 31 at 6 p.m.

Award-winning Russia scholar Angela Stent, author of “Putin’s World: Russia Against the West and with the Rest," will join JHC Executive Director Kevin Peraino for a FREE virtual discussion of her book and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Powerfully relevant to today’s headlines, Stent’s book asks the following key questions: “How did Russia manage to emerge resurgent on the world stage and play a weak hand so effectively? Is it because Putin is a brilliant strategist? Or has Russia stepped into a vacuum created by the West’s distraction with its own domestic problems and US ambivalence about whether it still wants to act as a superpower?”

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright calls the book “brilliant,” adding that both “casual observers and seasoned experts” will benefit from Stent’s discussion of “Putin’s strategy and its disturbing implications for the West.”

The Making of "Dickinson"

at the Jay Estate

April 6 at 6 p.m.

In April JHC will host a FREE virtual conversation about the making of the Apple TV+ historical comedy “Dickinson,” which filmed for more than two months at the Jay Estate last year.

The program will feature actor and musician Wavyy Jones, who plays the character The Wall in season three; actor Gabriel Ebert, who plays Thomas Wentworth Higginson; and historian Brenda Wineapple, whose book “White Heat: The Friendship of Emily Dickinson and Thomas Wentworth Higginson,” was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and describes the real-life history behind the storyline set at the Jay Estate.

Preservation Education

We are, above all, an educational center and value our ongoing partnerships with peer institutions of learning like the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) and the Morgan Library and Museum.

Thanks to Professor Mary Jablonski and Morgan Paper Conservator Reba Snyder for arranging a special visit and talk for students on March 29th inspired by JHC's collection of historic wallpapers. The session was followed by a behind-the-scenes tour of the Morgan's exceptional conservation lab.

GSAPP students are currently studying the paint and wall finishes of the Jay Mansion. We can't wait to see what their research yields! Plans are in the works to create object study classrooms on the Second Floor of the Jay Mansion to expand educational opportunities like this.
