Greetings REACH Supporters,
It has become nearly impossible to drive around the City of Rochester without noticing the ever-increasing number of people experiencing homelessness in our community. There are as many reasons for homelessness as people without permanent housing, loss of employment, domestic violence, substance use and mental health issues, lack of affordable housing units, etc. This homeless crisis is not unique to Rochester; it is a nationwide issue. What is unique to Rochester is our ability to respond to the crisis. Rochester does not need to get to the levels of larger cities with tents lining streets and parks because we have a solution.
REACH Advocacy is part of the solution. REACH has learned much over the past nine years of assisting individuals who are chronically homeless. All of this experience guided REACH and our partners to develop the Project Haven shelter system. Project Haven is a 6-site, 80-bed emergency shelter system. We have specialized houses for women escaping issues around sex trafficking, an LGBTQIA+ shelter, a sober shelter, and our traditional low-barrier shelters for people with significant mental health and substance use issues.
To be part of the solution to the homelessness crisis, we require a good deal of financial support, and we need this money NOW. Despite receiving some government funding, our financial health derives from the generous contributions of community members, and we need our community's help TODAY. We are writing to you to ask for an URGENT financial contribution. We must rapidly raise $200,000 to keep the doors open until Code Blue begins around November 15th. During Code Blue, the state helps to support the emergency shelter system financially.
