Camino-Pollock Pines Fuel Break to be Discussed at Community Meeting on Oct. 10th
PLACERVILLE, Calif. -  The El Dorado County Resource Conservation District (RCD), CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit and the Eldorado National Forest are hosting a community meeting on Thursday, October 10th from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Pollock Pines Community Center to discuss the Camino-Pollock Pines Fuel Break and other fuel reduction projects in the Camino-Pollock Pines-Sly Park area. These projects are part of a collaborative "all lands" program called Fire Adapted 50 which is working to improve wildland fire protection in the Highway 50 corridor. 

The Camino-Pollock Pines Fuel Break will expand and reinforce a major control line that was constructed during the 2014 King Fire along the ridge above the South Fork American River, north of Hwy 50. Over 100 property owners are involved in the Camino-Pollock Pines fuel break which is approximately 600 feet wide and extends approximately 8 miles from the Union Hill area near Camino to the Pony Express Trail near Pollock Pines.  This fuel break includes treatment on approximately 1,165 acres of private land and 1,000 acres of National Forest land. A CAL FIRE Climate Change Investment (CCI) Grant has provided funding for the portion of the Camino-Pollock Pines Fuel Break that is on private land. Contracting is in progress, and the work on private land is expected to begin this winter. Planning is still being completed for the Eldorado National Forest portion of the fuel break, and funding is being sought from multiple sources.   
 
Fire Adapted 50 is being accomplished through many different grants and agreements including a Good Neighbor Authority agreement between the U.S. Forest Service and CAL FIRE; an interagency agreement between CAL FIRE and RCD; grant funding from CAL FIRE and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy; hazardous fuels funding from the U.S. Forest Service; a Master Stewardship Agreement between the U.S. Forest Service and the Mule Deer Foundation; and private funding from various landowners and utility companies including Sierra Pacific Industries, El Dorado Irrigation District,  Sacramento Municipal Utility District, and Pacific Gas & Electric Company. 
 
In addition to the Camino-Pollock Pines Fuel Break, Fire Adapted 50 includes the Highway 50 Fuel Break on the north side of Highway 50 and the Sly Park Projects which extend outward from Jenkinson Lake. Fire Adapted 50 is a critical part of the larger cohesive strategy for wildland fire management in the South Fork American River (SOFAR) watershed. The SOFAR Cohesive Strategy is integrating three primary goals which are: 1) resilient landscapes; 2) fire adapted communities; and 3) safe and effective wildfire response.

The community meeting on October 10th will also include presentations on the El Dorado County Fire Safe Council's defensible space evaluation program and the County's vegetation management ordinance
