United States Road Rally Challenge – September 2018 Update
Columbia Town Hall
Greetings fellow USRRC Clan – Teams & Crew,

After an absence of 13 years, an annual national celebration of sports cars and classic sports-car rallying returns to the rural roads of southern Illinois and the Metro East Oct. 4-7.

Sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and organized by the St. Louis Region of the SCCA, the United States RoadRally™ Challenge (USRRC) will test the teamwork, time-keeping, and route-following skills of 40 or more SCCA road-rally teams from across the country.

The Hampton Inn in Columbia will serve as the headquarters for the early-fall gathering.

Last year, the SCCA’s Arctic Alaska Region played host to the annual event, with Anchorage, Alaska, serving as the headquarters city. In 2016, the USRRC, under the guidance of the SCCA’s New England Region , showcased the rural roads and fall colors of Vermont. Other USRRC locations have included Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.; Santa Maria, California; La Crosse, Wisconsin.; Portland, Oregon.; and Fredericksburg, Virgina.

“This is the 24th edition of the USRRC, and we are the first SCCA Region to host it four times,” says Peter Zekert , SCCA St. Louis Region President. “We last hosted it in 2005, when we stepped in for an East Coast committee that unexpectedly lost its Chairman and Chief Organizer to a heart attack. We were selected again for 2018 because of our central location and because teams that run the SCCA’s National RoadRally series, of which the USRRC is a part, enjoy coming to St. Louis.”

Before 2005, the St. Louis Region, with help from the Southern Illinois Region, also hosted the USRRC in 1998 and 2001. As with this year’s USRRC, the 2001 and 2005 St. Louis based “Challenge” events were run in southern Illinois, observes SCCA Southern Illinois Region President Chris Albin . He is pleased that the October weekend will again highlight the rural landscape of the Metro East. “There is a long history of cooperation between our regions, not only in rallying, but also in other activities, and this is just another example of how the Mississippi River doesn’t divide us,” he explains.

Zekert adds that this year’s USRRC will span four days, beginning with Tulips by Night Divisioanl Tour Road Rally , a short nighttime tour Thursday evening, Oct. 4, followed by Kaskaskia Trails National Course Rally on Friday, Oct. 5, and Le Petit Rallye du Rocher National Touring Rally Saturday, Oct. 6, and concluding with Monopoly Redux Divisional GTA Rally on Sunday morning, Oct. 7, that will be capped by an awards luncheon.

“We are looking forward to hosting this event again, and we believe rally teams will find the weekend enjoyable,” Zekert says.

USRRC Road Signs
Previous rally experience needed to compete in the USRRC?
While no previous on-the-road experience is absolutely necessary, a basic understanding of how a road rally works will be an asset. In the briefest of terms, a road rally is a long-distance trip from Point A to Point B with a number of stops in between, a schedule to maintain, and a route to follow. What you need is a car, a driver, a navigator, a clipboard, paper, pens or pencils, a calculator, and a time-keeping device of some kind. Also helpful: a sense of adventure, and for this year’s USRRC, the lure of America’s heartland for a destination. For those who have questions, a rally school will be part of our Thursday afternoon, Oct. 4, schedule.

That said, seasoned rallyists will equally enjoy the challenge of the routes and scenery along them in their quest for zeros!

What Classes?
In addition to classes defined by the RRRs— Equipped , Limited , Stock —this year’s USRRC will offer two additional classes, Historic and Rookie . Qualified teams may choose one or the other.
   •  Rookie . Together, driver and navigator have participated in no more than four SCCA divisional or national rallies. Equipment may be no greater than that allowed by Limited-class rules.
   •  Historic . Vehicles in production as of Jan. 1, 1976. Rules based on RRRs Appendix B.

For Historic and Rookie teams desiring to participate only in the Saturday and Sunday portions of the weekend. The 2018 USRRC offers this opportunity: Run Le Petit Rally du Rocher on Saturday and Monopoly Redux on Sunday for just $100. Then join us Saturday evening for our banquet and Sunday noon for our concluding awards luncheon.

We offer this opportunity as an introduction to classic SCCA road-rallying and as a way for you to have some fun with your wheels—while at the same time discovering the great countryside of southern Illinois. Combined, for these teams, the two events will count toward a Gateway Historic Cup for Historic teams and a Gateway Regional Cup for Rookie teams. You’re invited! We’d love to see you on the road.

What are the roads like?
No car breaker roads! You will find, as we have over the years that non-paved roads are getting harder to find — even in America's Heartland!

What are the entry fees?
The full entry fee for the USRRC is $250. The entry deadline is September 30th, so don't delay.
Single-Day Entries:
  • Thursday: $50.00
  • Friday: $100.00
  • Saturday: $100.00
  • Sunday: $50.00
  • Gateway Historic Cup only (Saturday/Sunday): $100.00
  • Gateway Regional Cup only (Saturday/Sunday): $100.00

What is the weather to be?
Well, like most forecasts these days – who knows? Traditional fall forecasts are days in the high 60's and evenings in the 40's! We are anticipating crisp fall weather with lots of sunshine!

Which airport should we fly into? We'll leave the bargain shopping to you, yet options include flying into St Louis Lambert International Airport or Chicago's O'Hare which is about a five hour drive.

Lodging for the USRRC
The Hampton Inn St. Louis — Columbia will be the host hotel. Only 15 minutes for St. Louis, yet located in Illinois, you'll find rates of $98 for the USRRC 2018!

Where can I learn more about the International Motor Racing Research Center fundraising efforts for the Rallying to Preserve the SCCA Historic Rally Archives campaign of the 2017 USRRC?
The Rallymaster of the 2017 USRRC has always been about raising awareness for causes important to her – Hospice of Anchorage, Bean's Cafe - a local soup kitchen, Friends of Pets and Kitty and Canine Connection with the Hittin' the Highway for Hounds and Hairballs, Challenge Alaska, and many others.

With the 2017 USRRC she worked to bring awareness of the International Motor Racing Research Center , located in Watkins Glen, NY, and their enormous task of work with the SCCA Archives. The SCCA Foundation has accepted our restricted donation that funds raised will be used for the digitization of the SCCA Road Rally archives (75%) and ProRally archives (25%), after the box-level inventory is complete.

Rallymaster Cheryl Babbe wrote us, "We still have one entry to the 2018 USRRC that is available to the highest bidder over $299! The funds will go to the SCCA Foundation (a 501C3 branch of the SCCA) and the funds will go toward the preservation of our RoadRally history for future generations!!" Should you win the bid, the organizers will refund your entry fee already paid when you registered!

Click the image below to learn more of our fundraising efforts! Should you wish to make a donation to add to the $3,786.26 raised in 2017, please mail you your check, payable to the SCCA Foundation to: RPM Alaska, PO Box 220108, Anchorage, AK 99522-0108
