A Note From Nancy...

How Inflation is Affecting Families

So many of us are feeling the impact of inflation with rising prices in food, gasoline, automobiles, and rent. Without a doubt, inflation is particularly devastating to lower-income households with already tight budgets and facing restricted access to basic necessities.

But how has inflation impacted our children, especially for those already living in poverty. There is less food on the table and so many are living in homes without heat or electricity due to unpaid utilities. Children are feeling the stress of their parents deciding about every penny spent and coping with finding ways to cut back. These consequences alone lead to a long-term impact on a child’s physical and mental well-being.

Kids may not know what inflation means, but they do notice when there are sudden changes in their home life. Helping kids understand the concept of how inflation affects their daily life can teach them valuable lessons on how to cope with cutting back during this crucial time. Take the time to have a conversation with your children.

Randi’s Camp for Hope and Courage:

Randi’s Camp for Hope and Courage is a three-day outcome-based therapeutic and recreational camp for children ages 8-13 years who have been exposed to domestic violence and/or are at risk.

Children participate in structured therapeutic activities that focus on building self-esteem, being positive, and building healthy communication skills, building relationships with parents, siblings, peer, etc. Randi's Camp promotes the development of active listening, effective communication skills, and daily healthy living skills through the use of positive peer support.

Ann Higgins, SpeedPro of Harrisburg

My husband, Dave and I own SpeedPro Imaging of Harrisburg, a large format print/imaging company in Lemoyne. Our focus is to provide quality printing/imaging services to our customers and to serve our community as a socially conscious company in volunteering and supporting a cause. For the past several years, SpeedPro has supported Tee Off Against Cancer and Wounded Warrior Project.

I was introduced to Nancy from a customer to help with signage. Through our conversations, I was inspired by Nancy’s story and wanted to know her better and volunteer with Randi’s House of Angels (RHOA). For the past three years, I have volunteered at Randi’s Race and A Round Fore Randi’s golf tournament. Both events are held in memory of her loving daughter Randi.

Our professional relationship extended to a personal relationship and good friends. Nancy understood as I shared my personal experience in losing a family member as a result of domestic violence. Perhaps this was the connection between Nancy and me. My understanding of how DV impacts so many people in our community is so real. This alone inspired me to become a volunteer camp counselor and assist in facilitating programs through RHOA. This experience has allowed me to see how I can make a difference in a child’s life.
