Volunteer Spotlight: Teacher / Mentor Institute; Kit and Game Field Teams
Working behind the Scenes to Make the Competition Possible
Let's take time to celebrate some of our awesome volunteers:
The
Kit Team has been working since January to inventory, repair, recondition, purchase, cut and count all the materials for the returnable and consumable robotics kits for the student teams from 3 Colorado hubs.
The
Teacher / Mentor Institute Team with
Front Range BEST
volunteers conducted a successful 2-day teacher / mentor
training using the prepared mini-ro
bot kits, training charts, teacher / mentor TMI notebooks, and with great refreshments.
The Game Field Team cut about $1000 in lumber, plywood, PVC pipe, and Velcro on a 100 degree day in early July. Our Game Field builders are busy constructing and assembling the components.

Carolyn Bauer RM BEST, Rosemary Mendel BRI and Tami Kirkland FR BEST |
We were thrilled to talk about BEST Robotics with around 200 VERY interested teachers from multiple countries and states including, Hong Kong, China, Turkey, Israel, Canada, Oregon, California, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, Utah, Michigan, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Missouri, and Arkansas, in addition to many teachers from around Colorado.
It would be FANTASTIC to someday have BEST in all 50 States ... and maybe eventually even in other countries!
Special thanks to Rosemary Mendel from BRI for bringing BEST Robotics to the Denver Convention Center and to the 3 DSST Byers students and 1 STEM Academy student (and their mentors) for discussing the BEST Award and for demonstrating their 2015 robot and game field at an afternoon 1 hour workshop.

Denver Teacher / Mentor Institute (TMI)
Teachers and Mentors Experience a 5 Hour Robotics Competition Season
Rocky Mountain and Front Range BEST volunteers had a blast introducing BEST robotics to 12 rookie teachers and mentors with the help of 4 veteran teachers and mentors and 4 BEST student alumni from STEM Academy, Lakewood High School, and Ralston Valley High School. Thanks to everyone who made it possible.
The 2-day training included hours of presentations the first day followed by a day of building a mini-robot. We ended the training with a 30-minute robot competition to give teachers a sample of what their students will experience over the 6 weeks this fall.
We were impressed at the teacher's and mentor's passion for their students, their patience in sitting through hours of PowerPoint charts, and their enthusiasm in competing in a mini-robot competition. You'd be surprised at all the cheers in victory and groans in defeat in their 30 minute competition.
