From The Governor's Desk

November is the month for every club to have a meeting or program to help our members learn about the fantastic work our Foundation does around the World. We are blessed to have one of the top 3 Charitable Foundations in the world supporting the great work we do in Rotary. The Rotary Foundation is the only Foundation that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation match our donations 2 to 1. Please take time this month to learn more about YOUR Rotary Foundation.

On behalf of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation, I want to take this opportunity to share some special congratulations to 16 of our clubs in District 6980 who have been recognized this fall by the Rotary Foundation for their Foundation Giving efforts last fiscal year. Special 2022-23 banners are being presented in recognition as an expression of our sincere appreciation for your members' generous support of the Annual Fund.

These clubs are distinguished from more than 36,000 Rotary clubs worldwide as being one or more of the following:

  • One of only 4,500 clubs worldwide to become a 100% Foundation Giving Club (clubs must have achieved an average of US$100 in per capita giving and 100 percent participation, with every dues-paying member contributing at least US$25 to any gift designation during the Rotary year).

Rotary Foundation Receives Highest Rating From Charity Navigator for 14th Year

For the 14th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.

The Foundation earned the recognition for adhering to sector best practices and executing its mission in a financially efficient way, demonstrating both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. Only one percent of the organizations Charity Navigator evaluates have received 14 consecutive 4-star evaluations.

“We are honored to have been recognized and to be among the top 1% of charities evaluated,” said Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair John Germ. “Our donors can feel proud knowing that their gifts will allow them to make an impact in their communities and the world for years to come.”

The rating reflects Charity Navigator's assessment of how the Foundation uses donations, sustains its programs and services, and practices good governance and openness.

Polio

Eradication

Update

An Update From Alex Sacharoff

District International Service Chair and Polio Plus Chair D6980

The current case count is 6 (2 in 2022) cases year to date in Afghanistan and 4 (20 in 2022) Cases year to date in Pakistan for the week ending November 7th.

There have also been 39 y-t-d (22 in 2022) separate environmental samples of polio virus detected in Afghanistan and 53 y-t-d (43 in 2023) instances of environmental polio virus detected in Pakistan.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only 2 countries in the world with endemic wild polio virus spread and are both incredibly difficult to address due to the complex mountainous terrain, dense pockets of unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children separated by large distances between villages making vaccination campaigns very challenging. The vaccinators are some of the bravest people we might ever encounter.

Against the backdrop of continuing wild type 1 polio spread we are so gratetul for the many individual Rotarians in District 6980 as well as some of our clubs who have taken the recent World

Polio Day as a call to action and carried out fundraising events to raise funds for The Rotary Foundation Polio Plus Fund.

Consider joining our district's Polio Plus Society by committing to donate at least $100/year to Polio Plus UNTIL Polio is eradicated everywhere. We already have more than 10 members of our district signed up and many more of our members are eligible based on this year's and or last year's Polio Plus giving. For more information reach out to Alex Sacharoff (asacharoff@cfl.rr.com) or DRFC Michael Franklin (strataceo@yahoo.com)
