SCRLC will be closed Monday, September 1st in observance of Labor Day! | | |
Cheery Friday Greetings,
Today’s column is fairly brief because I’ve been on vacation--I'll be back on Monday, August 25th.
Regional Conversations. There are still opportunities to register for a regional conversation, all of which are being held via Zoom and run up to 1.5 hours. While these conversations will help us develop the 2026-2031 Plan of Service, they are equally valuable as networking opportunities. What insights or experiences would you like to share with your colleagues? What are you hoping to learn from them? Discuss your successes, challenges, and plans in a supportive, collaborative space. Here are the remaining sessions:
-
Tuesday, September 9, 1:30pm, Library Assistants REGISTER HERE
-
Wednesday, September 10, 11:00am, Directors (any type of SCRLC member organization) REGISTER HERE
-
Wednesday, September 10, 1:30pm, Library Systems REGISTER HERE
-
Friday, September 12, 11:00am, General REGISTER HERE
-
Friday, October 10, 11:00am, Academic Libraries REGISTER HERE
Advocacy.
-
State Level: The New York Library Association’s Council approved the legislative “asks” for next year and should be posted soon. The Freedom to Read Act remains unsigned; the Open Shelves Act still needs to pass the Assembly--something to keep in mind if you're talking to your Assemblymember.
-
Federal Level: Advocacy remains critical—we can still save the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Senate would like to reauthorize IMLS and has even slightly increased the Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA) funding for state libraries--why it's still important to reach out to our representatives. Visit this link for actions to take to support library funding. Anyone not represented by an appropriations committee member can continue to contact their representatives via the action pages and other resources from ALA including Tell Congress to #FundLibraries. I hope that you are enjoying the fleeting days of summer and have a nice the weekend!
Yours in partnership,
Mary-Carol
