Showcase Ready!
ďťżwith Annette Lynch, MEDB's High Tech Maui Project Manager
Are you showcase ready?
Public speaking is a great way to show your leadership and communication skills. This STEMworks™ LIVE webinar was designed for students to help develop their confidence by reviewing powerful public speaking techniques. Annette Lynch shared her lessons through her career and knowledge as a Olympian, speaker trainer, and performance coach.

STEMworks™ interns discovered, reviewed, and practiced the essential techniques to be an effective speaker.

STEMworks™ interns also identified their fears when it comes to presenting. Annette defines F.E.A.R as “false evidence appearing real,” and emphasized that some of these fears are all in our heads. What are you afraid of? How would you be without this fear? What do you choose to think instead? What do you do differently now? By being aware of your habits, you can take corrective action.

Self awareness techniques can help manage performance anxiety. Watch your body posture. Your body posture can influence your confidence levels. Pre-performance jitters are natural but just knowing this may help you relax! Sound confident because the first words of your mouth needs to be bold, clear, strong, and interesting.

Here are a few more tips that Annette shared about conveying your message. A four question guideline called “4 MAT". It helps simplify what you need to talk about and hits all the main points of your presentation.

1. Why is this important to your audience? This is your connection with your audience, it peaks their interest.

2. Include facts, numbers, science behind it. This helps substantiate what you’re talking about.

3. How do you do these things? How would the audience use the information that you presented?

4. What if your audience does not have the materials or programs that you have? Be ready for questions!
How important are words? Did you know that visuals have more impact? About 55% is visual, 38% is vocality and 7% is verbal. The meaning is in people and not in words. Your look, your nonverbal cues, and your vocal quality are ways to quickly demonstrate confidence and competence. When your body connects to the words you are saying, your body naturally knows what to do. Your body flow will feel authentic and your message is believable.

When you learn and grow from a balance of confidence, you'll be in a fantastic position to connect with your audience for every presentation.

Now it's time what to apply what these learned and put into practice at our upcoming STEMworks™ Internship Showcase! Your confidence will grow as you gain more experience.
