Gardening Tip of the Week!

Pruning
It's time to prune your spring flowering shrubs! Early blooming shrubs such as lilac, viburnum, deutzia, forsythia & red twig dogwoods develop their flower buds during the summer and fall for blooming the following year. As a general rule, those flowering shrubs that bloom before June 15 should be pruned right after blooming. The shrubs that bloom after June 15 should be pruned the following spring.

Plant Spotlight!

  cotinus

Golden Spirit Cotinus Smokebush

This Smokebush is a show off! It will provide beauty in your garden from spring until frost. It has striking gold leaves all spring and summer then in fall, as soon as it gets chilly it magically turns a combination of orange, coral and red hues.
As if that wasn't enough, in late spring it sets of stems of smoky pink blooms. A beautiful contrast to its gold foliage!
This plant is not fussy about its soil condition as it can take dry, poor soil and actually prefers this type of soil! Select a location that has sun to part shade and you're "Golden". It can grow 6-8' tall by 5' wide but is adaptable to pruning if you prefer to keep it smaller!
