Safety Topic: Poisonous Plants & Insects
Pay attention to your surroundings especially if you work in a heavily vegetated/forest area, as there are several plants and insects that could cause you harm.
Insects
Check yourself frequently for bites or insects such as ticks embedded in your skin, and let your manager know if you discover one. If you develop a bullseye at the site where the tick has bitten you, immediately seek medical help, as this is a common sign of Lyme disease.
If you have an allergy to an insect such as a bee, make sure that your crew members know, as well as the location of your epi pen. Beware of snakes and any wildlife acting unusual.
Poison Ivy/Oak has 3 leaflets on each leaf, and a red color where the three leaves connect. Poison Ivy/Oak can cause a rash even through indirect contact, such as touching clothes, pets or objects/tools that have come in contact with the plant.
Wild Parsnip has a hollow stem, with vertical grooves running its full length. The stem and its multi-toothed leaves are a yellowish-green color. It has flat-topped flower clusters with yellow petals. There is a chemical in Wild Parsnip that can destroy cells and skin tissue.
Cow Parsley leaves are alternate, very finely divided, fern-like, and slightly hairy. The flowers are small and white with 5 petals, and they grow in an umbrella shape that can be about 3 inches wide. Its sap can cause a chemical burn on the skin when it is exposed to sunlight.
Thank you for taking the time to be aware of your surroundings.
Can you answer the question from this week's safety discussion?
If the bullseye does not appear within 7 days of being bitten by a tick, you are safe from Lyme
