“Struck-by” incidents happen when a worker is injured due to contact with a moving object or piece of equipment. For example, a worker could be struck by a tool falling off a roof, a moving vehicle, compressed air that is suddenly released, or a flying piece of equipment that broke off during use.
In 2023, over 17% of all injury claims to the WSCC involved struck-by incidents. These incidents often result in injuries to fingers and hands, eyes, and upper extremities.
A few examples that can help prevent struck-by incidents and injuries include:
- Inspecting tools for damage before using them,
- Proper training before using any new tools, and
- Securing materials and tools so they don’t slide off shelves or fall from heights.
