Safety Spotlight: "Struck-By" Injuries

“Struck-by” incidents happen when a worker is injured due to contact with a moving object or piece of equipment. For example, a worker could be struck by a tool falling off a roof, a moving vehicle, compressed air that is suddenly released, or a flying piece of equipment that broke off during use.

In 2023, over 17% of all injury claims to the WSCC involved struck-by incidents. These incidents often result in injuries to fingers and hands, eyes, and upper extremities.

A few examples that can help prevent struck-by incidents and injuries include:

  • Inspecting tools for damage before using them,
  • Proper training before using any new tools, and
  • Securing materials and tools so they don’t slide off shelves or fall from heights.

For a full overview and prevention information, visit our Struck-By Safety Spotlight page.

Safe Workplace

Through the Safe Workplace program, employer requirements under the Safety and Compensation Acts have been summarized into six easy-to-understand criteria. Employers that meet all six criteria are given the designation of Safe Workplace.

Achieving the Safe Workplace or Safe Workplace Advanced status shows your commitment to workplace safety. A downloadable certificate and badge will allow you to share your achievement with peers, employees, contractors, business partners, and the public. Visit your Safe Workplace dashboard on WSCC Connect to see your status.

Curious to see which employers have achieved this status? Check out the Safe Workplace employer list.

Haven’t achieved your Safe Workplace certificate yet or have more question about the program? Contact the Safe Workplace team via email: SafeWorkplace@wscc.nt.ca, SafeWorkplace@wscc.nu.ca, or call 1-833-315-2057.
