Safety Spotlight: "Struck-By" Injuries

Who is at most risk?

Struck-by incidents can happen to any worker in any job. These incidents range from hitting a finger with a hammer to being struck by a vehicle. Data from WSCC claims shows that certain occupations are at higher risk for these incidents.

In 2023, the occupations in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut with this most struck-by injuries were:

  • Construction workers
  • Carpenters
  • Mine Workers

Workers in these jobs do a lot of work with their hands and work with different types of equipment, so it is not surprising that most of these injuries involved workers’ fingers, hands, and arms.

To learn how to prevent these types of injuries and the hazards that can cause them, visit our Struck-By Safety Spotlight page.

NWT and Nunavut to have Separate YMIR Values

Starting January 1, 2025, the NWT and Nunavut will each have a distinct YMIR (Year’s Maximum Insurable Remuneration) value.

The decision to establish separate YMIR values is to ensure that a minimum of 70% of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut workforces will have their earnings totally covered in the event of an injury. Each value will reflect the actual wage growth derived from data analysis of Statistics Canada’s Average Weekly Earnings for NWT and Nunavut.

YMIR is calculated annually and is a maximum dollar amount that sets a cap on maximum remuneration for calculating workers’ compensation benefits and sets a limit on employers’ assessable payroll.

YMIR values and employer Assessment Rates for the year ahead are announced annually in November.

Working in the Heat and Wildfire Smoke

Summer in the North brings long days and sunshine, but also scorching temperatures and wildfire smoke. These conditions can pose a serious health risk for those who work outdoors.

Employers can help mitigate risk by providing workers with the information, training, and resources they need to stay safe in hot and smoky conditions. Check out the WSCC resources on Working in the Heat and Wildfire Smoke.

Office Closures

All WSCC Offices are closed for Civic Holiday on Monday, August 5, and will reopen on Tuesday, August 6, at 8:30 a.m.
