Prior to joining the AGC I had attended the AGC-Texas Building Branch (TBB) Legislative Day several times as a general contractor. Aside from a particularly stressful encounter with a staff member we referred to as “The Ice Queen”, I was mostly a passive participant in the process. I followed my group through the Capitol, letting the leaders handle most of the conversations with Senators and Representatives. I had been given the run down on which bills TBB was prioritizing during that session, but without a full understanding of each of them, I was content to sit back and watch the “experts” at work. It was a very good experience for me, and I very much enjoyed seeing how the process works. Outside of my high school history lessons and a Schoolhouse Rock! video, I will admit that I did not have a full understanding (or appreciation) for how a bill becomes a law, and I certainly did not fully understand the important role that lobbyists/constituents could have in the process.
