Good morning RRPS Community,

It's Friday, and that means it's time for the fifth edition of the School Reentry E-Newsletter for the 2021-2022 school year:
Symptomatic Children: What You Should Do
If your child is showing a symptom or symptoms of COVID-19, please be sure to follow the guidance below in order to keep all students and staff in our RRPS community healthy and well.

According to the Public Education Department COVID-19 Response Toolkit, if your child has a symptom that could be related to COVID-19, you must keep your child home from school for 10 days from the date you first noticed symptoms.

Steps to follow if your child is presenting with symptoms that could be COVID related:

  1. Call your child’s school. Please follow the prompts on the automated phone system.
  2. Leave a message for the attendance secretary. Please be prepared to provide the following information:
  • Student’s name, grade, the symptoms your child is experiencing, and the date the symptoms began.

You will receive an email within 24 to 48 hours confirming your child’s return-to-school date.
Your child may return sooner than the return-to-school date if:

  • A negative COVID-19 test result is provided to the school nurse AND your child remains fever free for 24 hours and symptoms are improving. (This does not apply to those on a mandatory Close Contact Quarantine) PLEASE NOTE: Rapid at-home COVID-19 tests cannot be accepted. If your child tests negative with an at-home test, a negative PCR test performed by a healthcare provider will still be required for return to school. (This does not apply to VAULT testing, which is PCR testing) If your child is tested for COVID-19, please do not send them to school until you receive the test results.
  • You provide a note from a medical provider to the school nurse that identifies a diagnosis that is not related to COVID-19.

Please be assured that your child will be excused from school during the quarantine period and you may obtain assignments from your child’s teacher(s) during the time he/she must stay home. If you do not hear from your child’s teacher(s), please contact your child’s them directly to obtain those assignments.

If your student tests positive for COVID-19, please call your school nurse immediately.
Discipline Matrix Addendum
As part of mask requirements and enforcement, Rio Rancho Public Schools is must provide our school community with notice of our updated discipline matrices by September 8.

Our student discipline matrices have been updated to reflect the discipline process for students who refuse to wear a face mask while in school, when required. The updates describe the consequences for violating mask-wearing requirements.

Per the NMPED, consequences for violating mask-wearing requirements will be supportive and instructional and will not include suspension or expulsion.

Click the button below to read through the updated discipline matrices or visit your school's website.
School Device Insurance Coverage
Rio Rancho Public Schools now has an option for parents and guardians who don't want to worry about damage to their child's school-issued computer or other tech device.

Utilizing the new school device insurance program, for just $22 a year with a $0 deductible, you can have peace of mind. This coverage will cover accidental damage, cracked screens, liquid submersion, fire, flood, loss/theft and more. Unlimited claims, full transferability, with no hidden fees. This program could potentially save you $300 per device, which is the cost of replacement if they are lost or damaged.

Note: If there is more than one school issued device in your household, you would need to purchase a plan for each device.

A Call To Action: We Need Your Help

Hello RRPS Community,

We need your help. We know that the last year and a half has been challenging. We recognize the difficulties that so many of our families have faced throughout the pandemic. You are not alone in those challenges. We have been there beside you, personally and professionally, working through the endless ups and downs of COVID. We know you are tired. We know you are frustrated.

Since the start of school, we have had employees across the district bullied, belittled, threatened and physically pushed or grabbed by parents. While this is a small minority of parents, the level of incidents is higher than we have ever seen. Staff members have been yelled at, have received emails and phone calls laced with profanity, our social media pages have been riddled with community members arguing with one another over things like masks, vaccines and even school lunches. We have seen a decline in civility and we see our students imitating the behavior they see. While we understand the COVID-19 roller coaster of emotions and stress, we will not allow our employees to be treated this way, and we are taking a firm stand against this behavior.

We invite constructive criticism, open dialogue, questions or concerns. We want to help. We want to resolve concerns. However, we will not return calls or emails that are threatening or uncivil. We will not tolerate profanity or intimidation. We will not allow our staff members to be belittled or bullied and we certainly will not stand for any form of physical abuse. Depending on the level of severity, we will take any necessary steps to ban individuals from school/district premises.

Our community has always supported each other with a solid sense of family, kindness and togetherness. But the recent decline and move towards regular negative behavior is concerning to Rio Rancho Public Schools as educators, parents, and community members. We need your help to bring back our sense of community, solidarity and kindness. We need your help by not tolerating or engaging in mean-spirited and aggressive behavior and speech. We need your help so we can continue to teach our community’s children how to be respectful, contributing members of society.

Thank you,
