DeepMind, a U.K.-based firm that is part of Alphabet, has developed an artificial intelligence and machine learning system that can predict the three-dimensional structure of proteins, decoding the amino acids that make up each protein. Last year, the system had 350,000 entries. Then on July 28, DeepMind co-founder and chief executive Demis Hassabis announced the expansion of the company’s database of folded proteins to more than 200 million — nearly all catalogued proteins known to science, including those in humans, plants, bacteria, animals and other organisms — and that the company is making them publicly available and free, accessible with no more effort than a Google search.

The database is called AlphaFold, and it is the equivalent of a James Webb Space Telescope for biology, providing astounding new visuals of a world beyond.
AlphaFold is a boon for BioEngineering and will help advance our understanding of human biology and preventing and curing diseases.

ASEI Partners with IIT Bay Area Leadership Conference | |
Conferences are usually avenues for networking but during the pandemic most events went virtual and we started to miss the camaraderie. As the world is opening up, slowly in-person events are making a comeback and ASEI Silicon Valley chapter had an opportunity to partner with the IIT Bay area alumni association on Aug 27th for a full day of learning and networking.
What value did it offer? Well, if you combine learning cutting- edge topics along with meeting industry colleagues and reconnecting with college alumni networks all in one, then that event becomes exponentially valuable.
Taglined “Reshaping the World in Transition” this event brought together over 50 speakers - some of them very well known names in the industry and over 700 attendees. At the event, the ASEI was represented by Piyush Malik, Surbhi Kaul and student member Nidhi Mathihali in addition to awardees Jyoti Bansal (2020) and Shalini Govil Pai (2021)
