Everyone enjoyed a day of food, fun, and festivities. From arts and crafts to train rides to hay rides, there was plenty to do at this grand event. Big thank you to the Lions Club for hosting and to all the vendors and volunteers.

 The Mass Cultural Council Distributes funds to local and regional cultural councils. The WB funds are used for grants to to arts, humanities, interpretive science projects for WB residents. Applicants must complete their applications online and submit them directly to the WB LCC.

The Building a Better Business Program is designed to help individuals who are looking to start or grow a business. It is an all-day, in-person event that is taught in three parts: legal, sales/marketing, and financials. The goal of this program is to have individuals create a working business plan that they can successfully execute. Crucial for finding financing for their business.

In-person events give small business owners a chance to come together and learn as a group. It offers education along with networking opportunities. When groups gather together, they collaborate, share their experiences, ask questions and help each other reach a solid understanding about business ownership.

Join Dr. Kerima M. Lewis for a lecture on “Slavery and Freedom in Old Bridgewater.” Dr. Lewis will talk about the institution of slavery in Old Bridgewater and Easton, and the story of an enslaved family who went on to live in Bridgewater after they were freed.

Karima M. Lewis teaches history at Massasoit Community College and Emerson College. Having worked in the fields of Social Work and Law before becoming an Historian, she holds a B.A. degree from Northwestern University, an M.S.W. degree from the Hunter College School of Social Work, a Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Lewis wrote her dissertation on the history of slave resistance in colonial New England. As a local public historian in the field of slavery in New England. Dr. Lewis makes presentations on this topic locally, across the United States, and abroad.

The Old Bridgewater Historical Society, a private organization, started in 1894 and is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and publication of history relating to the original Bridgewater township, which includes the towns of Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, and the city of Brockton.

1. Small businesses give back (more) to your community. When you support a local business, you’re also supporting your town, city, and neighborhood. Business pay taxes to their local town or city. That tax money supports public schools, parks, roads, and sidewalks, as well as public service workers, like firefighters. And according to Civic Economics, “on average, 48% of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 14% of purchases at chain stores.”

2. Small businesses make a major economic impact. More than half of the U.S.’s jobs since 1995 were created by small businesses. According to SBA, since 1990, big businesses eliminated 4 million jobs, while small businesses added 8 million jobs. Shopping at a local store creates potential job opportunities.

3. Small businesses provide better customer service.  They have is the ability to provide more personable, hands-on, and memorable customer service.

4. Small businesses provide greater access to product diversity.  If a small business doesn’t have the products you want or need, ask them!

5. Small businesses create a sense of community. You’re much more likely to get to know a small business owner and other customers in your neighborhood.
