Board Information and Updates:
Emporia Middle School 2025-26 Course Catalog:
Mr. John Martin, Emporia Middle School Principal, presented an overview of updates to the 2025-26 Emporia Middle School Course Guide. The guide outlines the required core subjects—English, Math, Science, and Social Studies—along with a variety of elective offerings and course descriptions to assist students in their enrollment decisions. All students are also enrolled in an advisory period. Elective courses will be scheduled based on student interest, ensuring adequate enrollment numbers. During the Spring semester, staff will begin sharing course information, gauging student preferences, and preparing schedules for the upcoming school year. Read the summary of changes here.
Mary Herbert Education Center Structural Issues:
Mr. Cory Nicolet, Director of Grounds and Maintenance, addressed structural issues with Mary Herbert Education Center during Wednesday night's meeting. Nicolet reported that the building's southwest corner has sunk between 2.875 and 3.75 inches, causing significant structural concerns. Nicolet outlined two potential solutions: stopping the sinking at an estimated cost of $250,000, which would only serve as a temporary fix, or raising the building and making extensive repairs, projected to cost over $1 million. The district is currently exploring all options to determine the most effective way to address the issue.
Benefits and Open Enrollment Update from IMA:
Representatives from IMA, the district's insurance broker, and Benefits Direct, who handle benefits onboarding, provided an overview of the recent open enrollment for district employees. It was reported that participation in the district’s insurance plans was very similar to the previous year with only slight increases or decreases in each category. Additionally, the team shared that they were very impressed with our district staff and highlighted the positive feedback received through staff surveys. Read more here.
Strategic Plan Quarterly Report:
Superintendent Dr. Allison Anderson-Harder and Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning, and Student Services Mrs. Judy Stanley presented the Emporia Public Schools Quarterly Report. The first portion of the report focused on triangulation of data with state assessments, FastBridge, and other student data. The second portion focused on celebrating a number of key accomplishments that reflect the district’s ongoing dedication to excellence. Highlights of the Quarterly Report included the Emporia High School Art Department's recognition at the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) District Showcase, extensive infrastructure improvements across district facilities, and an increase in staff retention rates at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.
Additionally, Mrs. Tara Glades, Director of Student Services, Dr. Erica Mickelson, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Mrs. Lisa Temeyer, Assistant Director of Student Services, reviewed highlights from the November 13, 2024 board study session.
