District Information:

2024-25 Hopkins Classified Staff Award:

The E.L. & Z. Irene Hopkins Foundation has generously supported Lyon County schools for over 20 years by providing Hopkins Awards. Traditionally, these awards have been divided into two categories: Project Awards and Individual Awards. This year, the Foundation is introducing a new initiative recognizing Heroic Classified Educators. While past awards primarily highlighted the contributions of licensed educators, this year’s awards aim to celebrate the classified staff members who play an essential role in daily school operations and significantly impact students’ lives.

The awards will honor individuals who have performed remarkably, making a meaningful difference in the life of a student or colleague. To be eligible, nominees must be classified staff members, either full-time or part-time, who are in good standing. Nominations can be submitted by employees, students, parents, or community members. Those making a nomination must provide a brief statement using the designated form, describing the nominee’s contributions and how they have benefited others. All nominations must be submitted online.

Nominations are currently being accepted and will remain open through February 15. Once the nomination period closes, a selection committee will review submissions in late February. Their direct supervisors will then verify potential winners before final selections are made. Award recipients will receive a cash prize of $500 (minus taxes) to use as they wish.

Use this link to nominate a deserving classified staff member by February 15.

Winter Weather:

Please be assured that the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority during all threatening weather conditions and emergency plans are in place. As we all know, Kansas weather can change quickly and become highly unpredictable and dangerous. Decisions regarding cancellations and delays will be based on what is safest for students and staff of Emporia Public Schools (EPS). While we work collaboratively, choices made by other districts or by local higher education institutions may or may not influence the final decision made by EPS because of districts and institutions that differ in size or the operational procedures of that institution. Highlights of the Emporia Public Schools emergency weather safety procedures are outlined below. Click here to review district inclement weather information.

Thought Box:

The district would like to hear from you. We appreciate your input and would like to hear your ideas, opinions, and questions to continue moving the district forward. If there is anything you would like to share anonymously, please click here to complete the Thought Box Form.  This form will also be located in the Quick Links section on the district website's front page.

Board Information and Updates:

Mary Herbert Education Center Building Evaluation:

Mr. Rob Kramer from KCPro Foundation Repair, and Mr. Cory Nicolet, Director of Maintenance and Grounds, provided updates to the Board on the structural concerns of Mary Herbert Education Center. Mr. Kramer reevaluated the building's structural columns and compared the current measurements to those taken approximately one year ago, noting minor movement. He confirmed that the structure is safe as of the time of the evaluation.

Mr. Nicolet presented cost estimates for addressing the issue. Lifting the building would cost around $1 million or more while halting the building's sinking is estimated at approximately $250,000. Nicolet emphasized that addressing the sinkage would not provide a permanent solution to the underlying problem.

After hearing the report, the Board will have additional conversations to determine the district’s next steps.

FY24 Fiscal Audit:

Mr. Sean Gordon, CPA with Gordon CPA, summarizing the results of the district’s fiscal audit for the 2023-24 school year. The audit, conducted according to strict professional standards, resulted in an unmodified opinion, which is the highest level of assurance auditors can provide. This means that the district’s financial statements are accurate and comply with accepted accounting principles.

The federal program audit, which follows rigorous federal and state rules, confirmed that the district’s practices meet high standards. It also found no issues with how the district handled or reported its federal funding.

Audit Highlights:

  • Meeting Federal Rules: The district followed all rules for federal programs without any issues.
  • Strong Financial Management: No weaknesses or concerns were found in the systems used to manage federal funds.
  • Accurate Reporting: Reports on how federal funds were spent were clear and correct.

These results reflect Emporia Public Schools’ commitment to strong financial accountability and transparency. Mrs. Pam Stranathan, Assistant Superintendent of Business/Operations, highlighted her appreciation for the district’s financial management, saying, “This audit shows our commitment to managing public funds responsibly and making sure every dollar benefits our students.”

Accreditation vs School Improvement:

Dr. Erica Mickelson, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Dr. Ryan Karjala, Director of Assessment and Accountability, presented to the Board the distinctions between accreditation and school improvement. They explained that accreditation in Kansas comprises three key components: compliance, school improvement, and outcomes. Compliance ensures districts adhere to state and federal regulations, while school improvement focuses on enhancing coherence through high-impact, fundamental actions. Outcomes serve as the annual measures by which district progress is assessed.

Dr. Mickelson provided an overview of the Kansas School Improvement Model and the associated timeline. Dr. Karjala discussed the KESA (Kansas Education Systems Accreditation) Outcomes and outlined the district’s Accreditation Timeline. Together, their presentation clarified the processes and expectations involved in Kansas's accreditation and school improvement efforts. Review the presentation slides here.
