JEA: Taking Power Park Redevelopment Steps

Learn More

JEA is moving forward on plans to redevelop the city-owned utility’s St. Johns River Power Park in North Jacksonville for industrial use, CEO Jay Stowe said in a Dec. 15 interview.

The plant started producing electricity in March 1987 and was shut down in January 2018. JEA reported that the closure of the plant, which consumed 4.5 million tons of coal per year, reduced its carbon footprint by 30%. Demolition of the 1,264-megawatt plant was completed in 2019.

Safety Training Spotlight:

Fall Protection in Construction & General Industry

01/19/2024

8:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Learn More

In this safety course, you will be provided with the basics of fall protection safety with an overview of various fall safety tips and requirements in the Construction industry. This course presents numerous case studies that cover topics such as fall hazards, fall hazard evaluation, fall hazard control, and training requirements. When you have successfully completed this course, you will be able to promote fall protection safety in your workplace.

OSHA: WORKPLACE SAFETY REMINDER

FALL PROTECTION

Falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. Employers must set up the workplace to prevent employees from falling off of overhead platforms, elevated workstations, or into holes in the floor and walls.

Employers must set up the work place to prevent employees from falling off of overhead platforms, elevated work stations or into holes in the floor and walls. OSHA requires that fall protection be provided at elevations of four feet in general industry workplaces, five feet in shipyards, six feet in the construction industry and eight feet in longshoring operations. In addition, OSHA requires that fall protection be provided when working over dangerous equipment and machinery, regardless of the fall distance.

To prevent employees from being injured from falls, employers must:

  • Guard every floor hole into which a worker can accidentally walk (using a railing and toe-board or a floor hole cover).
  • Provide a guard rail and toe-board around every elevated open-sided platform, floor, or runway.
  • Regardless of height, if a worker can fall into or onto dangerous machines or equipment (such as a vat of acid or a conveyor belt) employers must provide guardrails and toe-boards to prevent workers from falling and getting injured.
  • Other means of fall protection that may be required on certain jobs include safety harnesses and lines, safety nets, stair railings, and handrails.

OSHA requires employers to:

  • Provide working conditions that are free of known dangers.
  • Keep floors in work areas in a clean and, so far as possible, a dry condition.
  • Select and provide required personal protective equipment at no cost to workers.
  • Train workers about job hazards in a language that they can understand.

OSHA requires employers to provide their employees with a safe environment to work. In the event an emergency situation arises, most employers must have an emergency action plan that describes how employees are expected to react. All employees must be trained on these written plans, which list emergency contacts and procedures like reporting fires or other emergencies, evacuation, and rescue/medical operations.

American Red Cross - Adult - First Aid/CPR/AED/BBP

Seven out of ten cardiac arrests happen in front of bystanders, however less than 20% of lay bystanders end up providing first aid. Furthermore, lay bystander resuscitation rates differ significantly across the world, ranging from 5% to 80%.

The Adult First Aid/CPR/AED/BBP course equips students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adults. It is designed for students who need a certification that satisfies OSHA workplace or other regulatory requirements. Upon successful completion a valid 2 year digital certificate for Adult First Aid/CPR/AED is issued. BBP is valid for 1 Year.

Aerial Lift Safety Course with Evaluation

Request Training

On many construction sites, aerial lifts, such as boom and scissor lifts, are a standard part of day-to-day operations. They offer the versatility and flexibility construction workers need to get from one point to the other with ease. If you find yourself operating one on your construction site, you need to become familiar with some of the hazards they present, such as tips, collisions, and risk of electric shock. In our Aerial Lift Operator Safety with evaluation, we’ll cover vital topics like what to do before operating an aerial lift, what load-capacity limits mean, and when and how to perform inspections. This course includes equipment evaluations. 1910.66 App A
