GREENWAY PLANS MOVE FORWARD
Buncombe County was recently awarded a grant from the French Broad River Metropolitan Planning Organization to expand greenways across the county. Connect Buncombe was able to contribute funds, moving plans forward for a riverside greenway that will connect the RAD with the Woodfin Greenway and Blueway system, as well as several other greenway projects across the county. STRIVING BEYOND
In our most recent blog, Vice President of Connect Buncombe, Linda Giltz, shares details around last month's Strive Not To Drive campaign and summit. Throughout the month of May Strive hosted various outreach and educational events to celebrate alternative transportation in Asheville, including acknowledgment of the greenways that connect our community and allow the public to walk or ride instead of drive. FLOODING ON THE GREENWAYS
Widespread flooding from tropical storm Alberto forced road closures and mandatory evacuations across Western North Carolina in late May. Businesses, parks and greenways along the Swannanoa and French Broad Rivers were closed due to the rain and runoff. Governor Roy Cooper issued a State of Emergency for the region. Several days later the water had receded, allowing the City to begin flood clean up.  LEARN MORE
NCDOT PROPOSAL
T he North Carolina Department of Transportation has proposed a state project which would return pedestrian traffic to one of the oldest transportation corridors in Western North Carolina. A public input meeting was held to to gain feedback on a plan to build a paved path for people on foot or bicycle along the south side of US 19-23, east of Canton. LEARN MORE
