SAVING MORE THAN DOGS SINCE 2007
Issue 14 - August, 2021
Food for Thought
The Paws in Prison program has a long history of miracles. Some of us get a second chance (or more) at finding LOVE, human and/or canine.

Some people in prison get a second chance to make better life choices, no matter the life circumstances.

And some dogs get a second chance at finding a loving, forever home.

Paws in Prison is a nonprofit that believes in second chances. What second chances have you had?

What is this Dog?
Hello, my name is Delilah Joyce Jr. Baines. Y'all got to meet my brother from another mother last month…they saved the best for last. At home we are known as beauty and the beast; guess who beauty is? That’s right you are looking at her. I too was picked up off the streets of Lockhart, Texas by the same nice lady, Machelle, who took me to prison and enrolled me into Paws in Prison. At first I did quite well in prison. I learned very fast but got bored after a while and started guarding my prison mom just to keep myself on top of things. I love to guard my herd, but for now, that is just my human mom. My puzzle solving abilities are off the chart. I’m not much of an alarm like my brother is, but I am very stealthy and will sneak up on any threat without a peep. Lastly, I am the boss of all the animals in our forever home but Dexter can run faster than me so playing fetch isn’t any fun since I can’t get to the ball first. Now, let’s see if you can guess my breed(s). The answer is at the end of the newsletter. Good luck!!!

PLAYING TUG OF WAR
WITH YOUR DOG

Does your dog love to play tug-of-war? Maybe you’ve stopped this type of game after hearing the mistaken belief that it encourages problem behaviors? However, speak to any top dog sports competitor or qualified trainer, and they will tell you that well-managed tug games have many benefits, and there are even scientific studies confirming they don’t promote aggressive or dominant behaviors.
Meet Chevy!

I am Chevy! LOOK AT MY FABULOUS EARS!!!! I am a fun-loving, energetic boy. I've been in the prison long enough. I'm about one year old and 45 lbs. I've worked with multiple ladies in the program so I have learned a lot! I've done great on basic obedience work but the confined environment of the prison is hard on me so I am now in a foster home where I'm getting along great with their dogs, but unfortunately, the foster cannot keep me past August.

I know a number of basic commands. I come when called and I even do a few tricks! I'm fine getting into a crate and, most importantly, I'm potty trained! Keep in mind that I'm still young and have some growing up to do. I really need a fun and loving home! Please think about fostering me, or better yet, adopting me!
Meet Ms Sylvia

She is usually the first person you hear from after you submit an adoption application. She makes certain our dogs receive veterinary care when they are sick or need immunizations or are to be spayed/neutered. She does home checks to make sure your home will be a safe place for you to add a PIP dog to your family. She mails out our PIP merchandise. And she is Ms. Laria's sidekick in the prison, taking notes, updating paperwork, and helping inmates with the dogs. She is the backbone of the organization and we couldn't do all that we do without her.

We love you Ms Sylvia!
NEW BEDS FOR OUR DOGS!

Have you ever heard of Kuranda pet beds? They are strong, sturdy, last for years, and are created to provide elevated orthopedic comfort.

Friends of Paws in Prison applied for a grant for 10 of these beds from Animal Rescue Aid. They provide in-kind donations for shelters and rescue groups through Facebook. They posted our request on their Facebook page with over 40,000 followers, and in 48 hours we were funded!!! Thankful to all those kind folks who care about dogs having a comfortable place to sleep while incarcerated and to any of our supporters who contributed.
Upcoming "Fun" Raisers (AKA Fundraisers)

It's the cold reality of nonprofits - we can't continue "saving more than dogs" without income to pay our expenses. Don't you hate when you donate then you get a zillion more requests to donate more? We hate doing it too, so we try to come up with fun ways to earn more income (those who competed in the Relay 4 Rescue know how fun and hilarious that one was). Here are the upcoming "fun" raisers for you to put on your calendars: 1) Cutest Critter Photo Contest the month of September, 2) Petco Foundation Love Stories, due no later than Sept. 20 - but send them in NOW if you can, 3) be on the lookout for an announcement for a really big and new event we are hosting on October 7!
THE CUTEST CRITTER
PHOTO CONTEST IS BACK!
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 1 - THURSDAY, SEPT. 30, 2021
It's a fun way to hold an online fundraiser!
On September 1, enter your pet's photo then start soliciting votes from your friends and family to win some great prizes (and even if you don't win, we will be so grateful for the votes you were able to get)!

Beginning September 1 you can enter the Cutest Critter Photo Contest through a link to our fundraising host's website.

It only costs $5 to enter then $1 per vote - and voters can vote as often and as many times as they want to help you win. Here are the prizes we have for the contest:

  1. One week stay in a 3 bedroom, ocean view condo that sleeps up to 6 people in Grand Cayman in September or October of 2022
  2. Restaurant Gift Card Package worth $500
  3. $170 Gift Cards to Pet Supplies Plus
  4. A hostess Charcuterie Board with goodies included in a PIP Tote Bag
  5. James Avery jewelry piece
  6. Bark Box of goodies for your canine
  7. A custom 2022 Cutest Critter calendar highlighting the top 12 winners
Do you have a Paws in Prison Dog?
Submit your Love Story by Sept. 20 to the Petco Foundation to help us win funds!
There is more than one way to help us with funding besides sending us money. If you have a Paws in Prison dog right now, regardless of what year you adopted, please share your Love Story with the Petco Foundation by September 20, 2021, in 500 words or less.

You may know you have a great story, but don't feel like you are a good enough writer. Petco allows us to help you edit your story, but you have to write it and submit it to them per the button below. For editing help, send your story to:
Adoptions@pawsinprison.com

Go ahead, just do it right now!
