Our goal is to send only one email per month because we don't want to add to the bombardment of emails you already receive. You can subscribe to our emails at the bottom of the website home page or unsubscribe at the bottom of each email.

I've been in the Paws in Prison Program since April 9, 2019 and I've learned so much about working with the dogs. But I've also learned a lot about myself and the woman I truly want to be. I can't explain in words how or what this program has done for me. I've had a number of dogs but three were very special. Max was the first. He was blind with no teeth and missing half of his hair. He was here for a long time until he was finally blessed with a home by one of the Lockhart nurses. Then there was Truffles, she was also missing hair and smelled real bad from a skin issue. But she was a joy as well. I got her all cleaned up and took care of her skin issues and her hair grew back. She was also adopted to a good home. Then Trixie [pictured above] opened my heart and was so much like me. She had been mistreated, hurt, left and did not trust anyone. She was almost like a wild dog and would hide under my bed and shake. Everything scared her and no one could touch her. It took me more than three days to get her to take food from me and relax enough for me to even touch her. She was a real challenge and touched my heart with all she had been through. During this time I was struggling and had a few problems with my different bunkies. I was close to being kicked out of the program. But then I thought, if Trixie could love again and trust again, maybe so could I. After six months, Trixie also was adopted to a wonderful home.

Even though I had some misfits that needed a lot of love and care, along the way, they helped open me up to care. Then after some counseling with the program mentors and our leader Ms. L [Catherine Laria], I was given a second chance with a dog that could be trained from start to finish, a dog that wasn't just a misfit. Ms. L was trusting me and a week later came Nala. Oh my gosh! So different! So Perfect! So pretty, smart, loving, she was everything that Max, Truffles and Trixie weren't. Nala has really been amazing. It has been such a change. She has helped me grow and given me a little confidence. There are many amazing things I've witnessed in this program.
For me, the most rewarding thing is being a part of the endless amount of love given to each dog and seeing them get a forever home. And watching them get their spirit back. They came here broken and leave here whole... just like I'm gonna do.
Every day spent with these dogs is a day of healing for them and me. Mercy to the angels means mercy for mankind. It's so amazing when I hear how a dog is doing. How Trixie has changed, the love she can now give and receive because of the time she spent here with me at Paws In Prison. I know Nala is going to do great things and I know I will one day too!

(5) DO DOGS GET JEALOUS?
Excerpted from an article by Dr. Karen Becker
|
|
- If your canine companion seems to get jealous when you pay attention to other dogs, it’s probably not your imagination
- University researchers in New Zealand observed a small group of dogs as their owners interacted with a stuffed dog and discovered that not only did the dogs show jealous behaviors, but they also showed them even when they only imagined their owners were being affectionate with their fake-dog rivals
- An earlier study of small dogs demonstrated that 78% tried to push or touch their owner when the owner was interacting with a fake dog
- The dogs in both studies were much less reactive when their owners interacted with inanimate objects, such as a fleece cylinder (the current study), a jack-o-lantern and a children’s book (the earlier study)
- These studies suggest that not only does canine jealousy appear similar to human jealousy, but also that dogs are motivated to protect important relationships
