Nibbling on Natives in Your Back Yard and Beyond

The Library is happy to partner with the West Newbury Wild & Native group to bring you this presentation.

There’s an increasing interest among homeowners, property managers and others to utilize more native species in their landscaping. The fact that many of our native species are edible by people too provides an additional incentive for people to plant them in their yards and landscapes. Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, for a 60-minute slide show featuring at least two dozen species of native edible wild plants suitable for adding to your own landscape, or nibbling on as you encounter them in other locales. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided, along with edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation method(s), along with guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging. Russ will also include a few details regarding some native edible plants he has grown successfully from seed, and the partnerships he has made with conservation groups and others to add edible native plants to their landscapes. A Question and Answer session will follow the presentation.

TAG Take Out! October

A takeout service for teens in Grades 6-12 that includes books and goodies and it's totally free.

All you need to do is fill out the google form and tell us your interests. Based on your answers, we will select books for you.

From October 4 - October 15, place your orders. Pick up your takeout bags from October 18 - October 22.

West Newbury PTO & GotSneakers.com are Collecting Old Sneakers

Now through October 18th

The West Newbury PTO has partnered with GotSneakers.com and are collecting old sneakers! GotSneakers.com helps schools raise funds AND donates used sneakers to areas in need. This is a WIN-WIN-WIN! Clean out your sneaker rack, make money for the Page School and help those in need! GotSneakers.com accepts donations of sneakers only and they can be in any condition.

Shoes should be bagged and dropped in the bin at one of three locations:

Main office at the Page School (for Page families)
West Newbury Town Hall
GAR Memorial Library

The West Newbury Cultural Council invites you to participate in a Yard Art Community Wide Event!

2021 Theme: Wanderlust

Dates: October 23rd - October 24th

10am - 5pm (Artwork can be taken inside at night)

Has emerging from this pandemic year presented you with the urge to wander, roam and explore new things?

Join your fellow West Newburians and participate in YardArt!

Let your imagination run wild! Do you have recycled treasures or artifacts you’ve been wondering how to display? Have you thought about trying your hand at sculpture, painting, woodworking or fabric arts? Explore your passions and put them on display in YardArt!

The Cultural Council encourage families to work together, neighbors to collaborate, school groups to participate and everyone to have fun!

Before the big event, a neighborhood map will be created for your viewing and wandering pleasure. Get those creative ideas flowing and be a part of YardArt!
