The mission and ministries of First Christian Church are to share the Good News of Jesus Christ by being instruments of God’s unconditional love and grace for all people. We live and practice Jesus’ command to “love one another as you would love yourself.” We are a dynamic and diverse congregation and would like to invite you to become a part of our church family.

By Rev. Donn Brammer

During the season of Lent people may try a variety of things to deepen their spiritual life and improve their walk with Christ. Some people will give up chocolate, or TV, or gossip; others may decide to add more time for devotions, Bible Reading or prayer. But sometimes we can be distracted by even the best of our intentions.

We read and study the Bible not to simply get more knowledge about God it’s about getting to know God better. We can be distracted thinking that it’s about information and we totally miss out on the transformation that takes place when we spend time in God’s presence.

We spend time in prayer and we may get distracted and pray as if we are trying to change God’s mind or persuade God to do something we want. Other times we think if we could get better at praying then somehow God would hear us and answer our prayers. But the purpose of prayer is not to get better at praying, the purpose of prayer is to spend time with God and as we spend more time in God’s presence we discover a gift: prayer doesn’t change God, prayer changes us. The more time we spend with God the more our perspective and priorities change.

Such disciplines as Bible study and prayer time isn’t always easy, and it is seldom convenient, but it is always rewarding. Like physical exercise, we discover that if we discipline ourselves, dedicate ourselves, and commit ourselves, our habits change, we pay more attention to what we are putting in our bodies, make different food/drink choices, our health improves, we rest better, have more energy, and we actually feel better. In the same way, when we spend more time letting God pour love and grace into our lives, we become more filled with love and grace and find ourselves filled not only with love and grace, but also joy and laughter. We see the world and others differently.

Jason Gray had a song out a few years ago that helped echo this truth: “I need more than a truth to believe; I need a truth that lives, moves, and breathes,... Its gotta be more like falling in love, than something to believe in, more like losing my heart, than giving my allegiance… it was love that made me a believer in more than a name, a faith, a creed, falling in love with Jesus brought the change in me.”

I pray that during this Lenten season we may discover or rediscover the song God puts in our heart and reawaken our passion for Jesus.

Philippians 3:4b-14 (Sermon Text: “Pressing On”)

Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29*
Luke 19:28-40 (Sermon Text: “Apparently Not Everyone Loves A Parade”)

*Portion of this psalm are used for the next 3 weeks. Today’s reading contains words that were sung as Jesus rode into Jerusalem; on Easter the reading reflects the triumph of God in the victory that Christ has won; and the following Sunday emphasizes the movement from humiliation/rejection to exaltation/glorification.

4/21
(Easter; Resurrection of The Lord)

Isaiah 65:17-25; or Acts 10:34-43
Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 (partial repeat from last week)
Acts 10:34-43; or 1 Corinthians 15:19-26
Luke 24:1-12 (Sermon Text: “Witnessing Even When We Are Dismissed”)

4/28 **

Acts 5:27-32
Psalm 118:14-29 (repeating again!) or Psalm 150
Revelation 1:4-8
John 20:19-31 (Sermon Text: “Faith And Doubt”)

**In the 7 week period following the celebration of Easter, the church uses this time to reflect on the impact of Jesus’ death and resurrection, so for the next 7 weeks, the first lesson Scripture Readings are from the Book of Acts, giving us a renewed sense of how Easter relates to the church’s mission, moving out into the world as faithful witnesses.

365 Bible Readings Please remember do NOT unsubscribe if you do not want to participate; simply delete that day’s reading. Thank you.

Fellowship Table If you would like to host our Fellowship Table that we enjoy after the worship services on Sundays, please sign up on the sheet provided in the Fellowship Hall.

Gift Cards: Gift cards are still being sold for all kinds of occasions! You can buy some cards today or if you want a card we don’t have on hand (there are over 1,000 retailers to choose from), you can order the card today and it will be ready for you to pick up the next Sunday. See Ellen or Janice at the table and they will help you fill out forms and answer questions. Each card gives First Christian a certain percentage, but you get the full value! Thanks for your support!

Prayer Chain Warriors: We have a dedicated group of people who pray every day not only for the church and its ministries, but also for friends and families who are in need of healing, comfort, guidance, and strength. Members are notified through email and are given daily (sometimes more) updates and each week a Prayer List with all of our concerns are listed. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please give Donn your email address and let him know. Thank you.

Remember! Our Temple Bells Newsletter is now online. For those who do not have internet access a few printed copies are available in the foyer.

Change for Change: Put your loose change to good use! Bring it to church and place it in the
“Change for a Change” container located in the Narthex. This money will be used for the re-roofing and remodeling projects of the church.

C.R.O.S. (Christians Reaching Out to Society) Ministries: Thank you for your faithful contributions to the food pantry. Please remember food can be placed in the designated area in the Narthex. Many of you make good use of the BOGO (Buy One Get One free) offers. Thank you.

Van Drivers are needed for Sunday mornings to pick up worshipers at the Fountainview (next door to the Christian Manor) and the Christian Manor and take them back after worship. You do not need a special license, but you do need a driver’s license. Drivers serve 1 month at a time. Please see Donn if you can help with this ministry.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY NEWS

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from around the country and around the world gather every 2 years for what we call our General Assembly for worship, workshops, fellowship and fun! This Assembly’s theme is “Abide In Me” based on John 15:1-5, and will meet July 20-24, 2019 in Des Moines, IA. Registration is now open and if you are interested in attending please see Donn.
To date we have raised $1,799.95 for our Week of Compassion offering and more is coming in! Thank you for your gracious generosity!

Indonesia is well-known for its rich, beautiful scenery. But in fall of 2018, a tsunami laid waste to the region, leaving behind a barren landscape. Thousands lost their lives, and even more lost homes and livelihood. More than 173,000 have been displaced. The scenery has been dramatically altered, as have the lives of those who survived.

In the immediate wake of the September tsunami, our CWS partners began providing tents. Within the first week, they were able to provide water, food, mattresses and hygiene kits as well. Now, six months later, few families in the camps are being transferred to transitional shelters: these structures are a step up from tents, though not intended for long-term use. Each one costs about $1100 to build, and can last for a few years. Measuring about 120 square feet, each houses a family of up to four people.

The long term recovery process is slow. With challenges in local infrastructure, it will take the government several years to complete the permanent rebuilding of homes. Most residents in this area are farmers and fishermen by trade. Having lost not just homes, but also vocational tools and access to land, survivors must find new ways of producing income to support their families.

This is the weight of waiting: waiting to return home or build a new one; waiting for the water truck; waiting for more work, or new work; waiting in grief with friends and neighbors who have lost everything.

In the face of such tragedy, we may be tempted towards despair. The need seems too great, and the suffering too extensive, for our gifts or presence to ever make a difference.

But in this holy season of Lent, we follow Jesus into the wilderness, the altered landscape of loss, because that’s where he always goes. We’re on this road together, to bear witness to the love that bears all things; even unthinkable suffering. By some mystery, our presence there is transformed to living hope. And we believe that, in the space that remains, God might do some new thing again.

Even in the most barren places, there are glimpses of good news. Church World Service continues to provide resources to those sheltering in camps--including fresh water supply, delivered daily. Plans are in place to build 200 more transitional shelters over the next two years.

Your generosity becomes living hope to those who wait. Thank you for letting them know that they don’t wait alone.

Disciples Women are on the move!!!
Working together as women of faith

By Candy Hansen

She stands at not quite two and a half feet; her already thick, chin length hair frames her brown eyes, cupid lips and full cheeks. Completing the little girl picture are pierced ears sporting a pair of tiny, sparkly   stones. What a delicate little one-and-a-half-year-old, you might think. How wrong you would be! Take your eyes off her, and she will climb over, under, around or up anything in sight. Her latest achievement: scaling benches and chairs to reach their high top dining table.

Upon my last visit, Zoey was sporting a small, crescent shaped bruise beneath her eye. Assuming she’d pushed her adventurous spirit a little too far, my son responded, “No, she was walking across the floor with her plastic cup and tripped.” And that set me to thinking this Easter season ~~~

Our Savior gave HIS all to be part of OUR all. Not just the big stuff, which is usually when we seek Him out. I too often fail to remember that I am in desperate need of Him every day and in all things. Nothing is too small for His attention and interest. He loves us that much. He wants to be included that much. He wants to be present when life unexpectedly trips us up with those plastic cups.

THOUGHT WORTH REPEATING FOR THE MONTH: nails didn’t hold Jesus to the cross; love did.
