As we face a New Year I want to remind us of a story in the Bible (Numbers 13) when the Israelites came to the Promised Land. You may recall that God had delivered the Israelites out of slavery and out of the land of Egypt. But even though God had provided miracle after miracle to help them escape Egypt (crossing of the Red Sea); gave them guidance as they journeyed, (pillar of fire at night, pillar of cloud during the day) and provided for them in the wilderness (manna, water), when they saw the Promised Land some of them despaired. Remember? Moses sent out 12 scouts to explore the Promised Land. Ten of the scouts came back and said, ‘These people are giants, we are like grasshoppers to them, there is no way we can enter the land.’ But two of the scouts, Joshua and Caleb said, ‘we got this because we’ve got God.’
Some people see challenges, others see opportunities; some despair, others hope. People can see the same thing, and yet reach two totally different conclusions.
Sometimes because of previous pain or disappointment, people will make their conclusions about life. This means that beyond just seeing what is wrong with the world, they lack the courage to do something about it, they are afraid of accepting responsibility. Such people are often called ‘cynics.’ The word ‘cynic’ comes from the Greek word for dog. The original cynics were followers of the ancient philosopher Diogenes and were called dogs because they proposed to live like dogs, no convictions, no shame. They believed the universe had no meaning; that aspirations were mere pretension; and to accept the meaninglessness of the universe; to just lie down on a park bench and get some sun while you can.
We are not followers of Diogenes; we are followers of Jesus, which means we have hope.
Joshua and Caleb saw ‘the Promise’ of the Promised Land, the promise that God would be with them. That’s the whole message of Christmas, the birth of Jesus, Immanuel; God with us, and here we are at the start of a year and lest we think the challenges are too big, don’t forget, God is with us. Someone once said, ‘Faith requires belief, and believing is what we do with our minds. Faith requires commitment, and commitment is what we do with our wills. But faith must also have hope, and hoping is what we do with our hearts.’ The Bible says it like this, ‘ hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts.’ (Romans 5:5)
So I wish you a Happy New Year, I wish you a Healthy New Year, and I pray that each of us will face this New Year with hope. We’ve got this, because we’ve got God. God Bless,

Everyone is welcome

Disciples Women are on the move!!!
Working together as women of faith

By Candy Hansen

As Nicole so aptly put it, “I won’t want to be looking at 2018 in my rear view mirror!” I can so emotionally identify with that statement. It has been a year of uncommon highs and lows - from the January death of my mother; to the September birth of my third grandchild; to the December illness of my boss, for whom I have worked almost 25 years. I heard someone compare life to a patchwork quilt: you take all the mismatched pieces you’re handed, and stitch them together as best you can. With the help of the Master Quilter, of course ~~~
The January 1 message from my God Calling devotional continues to capture my imagination: I stand between the years. The light of My presence is flung across the year to come - the radiance of the Sun of Righteousness. Backward, over the past year, is My shadow thrown, hiding trouble and sorrow and disappointment.
Song of Solomon 2:15 - “take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.” It’s easy to underestimate the erosive potential of small crises, particularly when larger ones loom. Someone recently challenged me to be ‘aware’ of what I had, as opposed to what I didn’t. I was given the opportunity of immediately practicing that suggestion through a series of small, exceedingly annoying events.
Case in point: when my bathroom outlets ceased to work one fine morning; when throwing my breakers didn’t solve the problem; when the cost of an electrician loomed; I purposed myself to take it in stride. What I didn’t have was a convenient outlet that worked. What I did have was an extension cord to reach one that did. That evening, and for no apparent reason, my outlets were ‘healed’! I’d like to think I was extended grace for passing the attitude test. Which, as anyone who knows me well will confirm, is not always the case ): How grateful I am that God never gives up on me; continuing to light my path, and shadow past failings. A full time job!
January 27: general meeting, where we will be teaming up for Taste of the World dinner assignments. Blessed to be a blessing . . .
Thought for the Month and 2019: gratitude is an attitude.

At times, we all could use someone walking along beside us, praying for us, supporting and encouraging us. We want to provide the opportunity for you to do just that! We would love for you to feel free to post your requests on the wall or if you feel more comfortable, you can keep your request confidential and our staff will pray for you.

It is privilege for us to support one another during difficult times, and we want to thank those of you who are faithfully praying for others!

Remember to share those praises as well!
