Randy 'O'Jay' Brooks dies at age 61

Randy O'Jay Brooks, a staple in Black St. Louis radio, passed away on Tuesday, April 22. He was 61.
Reared in the Pruitt-Igoe housing projects, Brooks figured out his life's path early. He wanted to be a radio man.
St. Louis radio legend Bernie Hayes remembered a 15-year-old Randy O'Jay, as he would later be known, hanging around the station when Hayes was a personality at KATZ.

He was always there doing whatever he could to prove himself useful. He left such an impression that Doug Eason, who was one of the bosses at KATZ at the time, hired the teen on to assist him and everyone else. It was the beginning of a career that stretched nearly 45 years.
"He worked his way into our community," Hayes said. "He was just a part of the [radio] family," Hayes said. "Every place you would be, Randy would be there.

As the music community continues to wrap its head around the complexities the CARES Act and other financial relief programs responding to the coronavirus pandemic, dozens of entertainment attorneys are volunteering their time and expertise to provide free legal services to help industry professionals figure out the resources available to them.
Three non-profits -- New York's Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), California Lawyers for the Arts and Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Artists of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville -- will be on the frontlines to provide assistance on the bigger issues, but also on such matters as contract disputes over performance cancellations, insurance issues, freelancer's unemployment assistance, labor and employment questions, and small business relief.             The World's  Greatest Drummer Dies
Afrobeat Pioneer & Drummer Tony Allen Has Died

Pioneering Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, a co-founder of the afrobeat musical genre, died in Paris on Thursday aged 79, his manager says.
Eric Trosset told NPR radio that he had died of a heart attack. AFP said his death was not linked to coronavirus.
Allen was the drummer and musical director of musician Fela Kuti's famous band Africa '70 in the 1960-70s.
Fela, as he was widely known, died in 1997. He once said that "without Tony Allen, there would be no afrobeat".
Afrobeat combines elements of West Africa's fuji music and highlife styles with American funk and jazz.

Most US states are reopening within days but some need time 'to remain vigilant'

More than half of US states will partially reopen by the end of the week, but some are opting to extend their stay-at-home orders in an abundance of caution.
"We need to use time to remain vigilant," said Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards on Thursday after extending the state's order through May 15.
Over the next few days, at least 31 states will reopen and Americans will see a patchwork of approaches as the country attempts to move past the crisis phase of the pandemic.

Fighting Energy Injustice and Coronavirus in African American Communities

A frican Americans are struggling with a disproportionate death toll from COVID-19 and severe financial strain from the economic downturn. This crisis has exposed preexisting racial disparities created by deep-seated social, economic and political factors.
These same underlying issues make African Americans more vulnerable to health damage from pollution, as well as from heat waves, storms and other effects of climate change.
Meanwhile, African Americans are missing out on wealth-creation opportunities in the clean energy economy, which could be an effective solution to some of these underlying issues - bringing jobs and environmental benefits to communities that need it the most.

Bill Gardner spun classic R&B on the L.A. airwaves for four decades. Then came the coronavirus

Bill Gardner has been broadcasting in Los Angeles for 36 years. But these days, when his  KPFK-FM (90.7) show "Rhapsody in Black" comes on at 2 p.m. on Saturdays, Gardner is listening to it on the radio like anybody else. "It's... a little surreal," he chuckles. "I don't know what they're going to play, and so I just sit back and listen."
With the COVID-19 pandemic leaving him and his wife, Paulette, under house arrest, and no makeshift studio in his Norwalk home from which he can broadcast, "Rhapsody in Black," like the rest of his life, is on pause. While Gardner sits quarantined, an engineer at the station pulls out a "Best of Bill" CD and slaps it on the air. Since his weekly show explores the charts for a given year of rhythm and blues history, there's a timelessness built in. 1955 is still 1955. But Gardner's fans wonder, given the need to keep the city locked down tight, and given the precautions an 81-year-old needs to take, when or if Gardner will once more come into their homes live and direct.
"He's a great guy, I love him a lot," says Billy Vera, a musician, bandleader and onetime radio institution in town himself. "Bill doesn't have one of those 'professional' voices or presentations, and that works in his favor. What's great about him is he's authentic - he lived the music. He really grew up at that time the records were being made.
"And he's such a gentleman. He's not one of those jive characters that a lot of jocks tried to be - there's a genuineness about him that's really affecting."  MORE HERE
