by Myrt Creigh, Former Lay Leader and servant of Christ
Recently I have been surprised to learn that there are those in our midst that, because of the new church’s name, we are no longer Methodist. Really? New Life in Christ Church is most certainly Methodist. We’re not United Methodist but we are Wesleyan Methodist… what does that mean, you ask. Do you remember why we disaffiliated? We wanted to remain rooted in the biblical teachings of Jesus Christ…do you know what John Wesley’s theology is?
See that’s the problem. Most people say they have belonged to such-and-such denomination all their lives but when you question them about their denomination’s theological beliefs…they can’t tell you. I was very guilty of this years back. For 50+ years I was a Presbyterian and never knew that Calvin’s theology was rooted in predestination. I don’t believe in the predestination concept as Calvin taught but there I was…a Presbyterian.
So I guess my question is do you know what the John Wesley theological teachings are? I can tell you when I became a member I didn’t make the mistake of not checking this time. In today’s technical world it is very easy to find out…. Google it!! You will be amazed at what you’ll find.
Does a name define who we are? No! I love our church’s new name…New Life in Christ Church. For me Christ comes first, last, and forever! I’m so proud to be a Methodist because of the grace and love we have through the Holy Spirit. Let’s come out of our home cocoons and reawaken our relationship with Christ in the Wesley Methodist tradition and glorify His name…I know I have.
Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart." Psalm 119:2

Greetings New Life friends and family --
August is typically a quiet and low key time, with people traveling, or having out of town guests, but we are busy discussing new projects and ideas for growth. As Pastor Angela mentioned last Sunday, we are asking for help with our Children and Family ministry. So if you have a heart for children and would like to spend a little time each month rocking a baby or reading to little ones, please let Ms. Becca, me, or Pastor Angela know. We're also looking to expand our Welcoming team for all 3 worship services. If we have more team members, the commitment wouldn't need to be so often. Watch for info about an upcoming training meeting and please let me know if you have questions and/or are interested in being part of this rewarding way to serve.
Do you know that New Life Church has a spot on the radio each week? Greg Raymond, who hosts a radio magazine style talk show on a local station each Tuesday, has graciously invited our various ministry leaders and Pastors to share info on our church. I was blessed to talk on prayer the past two weeks, which I must admit is a direct result of prayer. I was so quiet and shy and God has led me to not only pray out loud but pray with and for people, lead a weekly prayer group and write an article every week. Who would've thought!? Please tune in on Tuesday mornings to: I Heart Radio 1580 AM @ 11oclock. Our church segment usually comes on around 11:15. This is a great opportunity for our community to learn about New Life Church, so listen and let your friends know too!
A couple I talked with recently about prayer, challenged me about how I know prayer really helps people when they really don't seem to be healed. I did some research (other than the obvious answers) and discovered an article from two British researchers who reviewed many studies on this subject and cross-referenced the results. One fact the found was people of faith had a life expectancy seven years longer than those who didn't have faith. The following are some of the beneficial outcomes they discovered:
* well-being, happiness, and life satisfaction
* hope and optimism
* higher self-esteem
* greater social support and less loneliness
* lower rates of depression and suicide
* less anxiety, less psychosis and fewer psychotic tendencies
* less delinquency and criminal activity
* greater marital stability and satisfaction
This result was the outcome of analyzing 1600 documents over a nine year period. To put it simply, prayer works!
I mentioned last week that I'd like to share some of your prayer experiences and here is one I received this week:
M.N. wrote to say that she too has learned over many years to rely on God through prayer. One instance she shared was when her grandson suffered an injury and was hospitalized. Her son texted and said they wanted to remove his spleen. This prayer warrior Grandma said "no-- he's too young" and said she would pray through the night, which she did. About 4am her son called and reported his numbers were rising and to please continue prayers. By morning, her grandson was out of danger and on the mend. Praise God! She shared this as a reminder of God's grace and how blessed we are to rely on His strength in all situations. Please consider sharing a prayer experience with us! Sometimes we don't see immediate results like this and might question why our prayers aren't answered. Dr Charles Stanley says we must persevere. I have learned to keep on praying whether I see instant results or not. I realize that the longer I pray for a situation, the closer I feel to God. Believe me, the longer we pray, believe, and expect an outcome of our prayer, we can accomplish so much. We serve an extraordinary God and He makes our prayers powerful, even if we don't see the immediate results we expected. Keep on praying!
I'm praying for you!

Women of Faith started during the pandemic as an offshoot of Extraordinary Women for those who couldn’t do Zoom or simply wanted an in person outdoor Bible study. We were known as EW 2.0 until recently. We meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:00, usually under the Royal Poinciana tree on the west side of the parking lot. However, during the heat of the summer and in case of inclement weather during the winter, we meet in classroom 9.
We started in April of 2020 with just three women, but through the Lord’s blessing, we have grown so significantly that this summer we have become a separate Bible study from EW and hence the new name. We are finishing up our current study of the book of Acts on August 24th and will begin a new study of Romans on August 31st. If you are interested in more information on the group or would like to order the study guide for Romans, please contact Elise Gowan at (941) 286-3943. There is an open place just waiting for you. Please come join us!

Beginning Sunday, August 14th at 10:30 a.m. in Lenox Hall, The Harmony Class will begin a five-week study of “The Shortest Way Home: C.S. Lewis & Mere Christianity”. Doubt and disbelief live in the hearts of many people as they wrestle with the questions of good and evil and the existence of God. Those who embrace Christianity as a way of life must then learn how to live out their faith as a transformed individual in an imperfect and difficult world. But how is this accomplished? Please join us to find out! Class materials will be provided for all participants. All are welcome to attend!

Extraordinary Women - Begins August 18
|
|
Extraordinary Women is a Zoom Women’s Bible Study Group which meets every Thursday from 9:00-11:00 am. Brenda Allen is the group facilitator. EW Zoom is for all
women who enjoy learning about the Bible and how it applies to their life.
If you find it difficult or impossible to come to the church for a small group meeting, please consider joining us on Zoom. We have members who are out of town for the summer and want to stay connected to a small group. If you are the caregiver for someone who can’t be left alone our group may be the perfect way for you to participate in a small group. Do you like to stay at home and dress casually (that means shorts and no makeup)? EW Zoom is the group for you.
We are a very welcoming group, so please come and visit us. We are currently using the
Journey Through the Bible series and are presently studying Acts. We will start our study
of Romans on August 18. If you would like a book please contact Jan Armbrust at 941-
268-5967 or Sharon Voss at 941-639-1506. Contact Brenda Allen for the Zoom link at
941-286-2244.
