Hurricane Ian Recovery Update

Joey DePetro, Church Facilities Manager

Bob Lukes, Building and Grounds Chairman

We continue to make progress repairing our Church Campus after Hurricane lan. Below is a summary.

The Church office and adjacent garage repairs were completed on March 1, 2023. The roof of the garage next to the classrooms, classroom roof, and sanctuary roof repairs were completed on May 15, 2023.

The Life Center roof shingle repair is about 80% complete. The South wall masonry has to be repaired before the south roof section can be repaired. Finding matching brick to repair the south wall is the issue right now.

The two new Life Center ten-ton A/C units to replace the units damaged during lan have been received. One damaged A/C unit was replaced on the northwest side of the Life Center. A bigger crane is needed to replace the A/C unit on the southeast side of the Life Center. Originally, we thought that the three painted glass protective windows on the south side of the Sanctuary needed to be replaced. Actually, the windows are OK, it was an ultraviolet (U/V) film that was torn which will cost much less to replace.

Concerning insurance cost recovery, we did receive insurance funds for repair of the two garages and the classroom building in December 2022. In April we received another settlement for removal of debris from the ten damaged or lost trees on the Church Campus. We submitted cost recovery to the insurance company on 6/1/23 for the mitigation work that was performed to protect church property until the buildings could be repaired. During the week of 6/19/23 we will be submitting to the insurance company invoices for repairs significantly over the insurance company deductible and depreciation formula.

After the Life Center masonry and south roof is repaired there are four other critical items that need to be repaired:

  1. Final repair of a Sanctuary beam.
  2. Repair or replacement of the handrails around the Life Center, and the Olympia Street stair handrail. Repair or replacement of the Lenox Hall roof hatch safety rail.
  3. Replace the Lenox Hall bathroom vent.
  4. Replace gutters and downspouts.

There is a list of 21 additional repair items that are not considered critical. Depending on Church Leadership Council and the Finance Committee approval, the Building and Grounds committee may budget for the 21 repairs in the 2024 and 2025 budgets. A sample of the non-critical repairs are.

  • Replace the broken glass in the two exterior lights on Marion Avenue side of the Sanctuary.
  • Start replacing Church Campus trees.
  • Replace the torn sun curtain on the Lenox Hall west stairway.
  • Repair the dumpster fence.
  • Please continue to pray for our Church and community as we slowly recover from Hurricane lan.

A Word from Worship

Greetings New Life Church family --

I pray everyone is staying safe as well as cool and comfortable during these very hot and humid days.

The new Offering Boxes are now in place in both the Life Center and in the Sanctuary for your convenience. We know that many of you take advantage of the on-line giving option and have felt a little uncomfortable when the Offering plate/-basket was passed. While I can assure you that the ushers never paid attention if someone didn't place something during the collection, we certainly don't want anyone to feel self conscious about giving procedures. After discussing different collection options and much prayer it was decided that this would be the best solution for our members. The boxes are located at each door of both buildings for your convenience.

Change, like struggles of any kind, are never easy. Thinking of my many years of health problems, I know that there is no way I could have walked this journey alone. I don't believe that I'm alone in wishing that life would just be "easy". What I've learned however, is that each struggle serves a purpose. If we stop and consider, every day we're challenged by different tests - whether through people, pain or problems - such as snarling traffic, threatening weather, or maybe aching joints? I don't believe God uses these as punishment, but training. He doesn't want to make our lives hard, but when our faith is tested, our endurance has a chance to grow. People ask me how I can "keep going" when new problems continue. I can only say that God has shown me that no matter what, He will absolutely get me through it. Trust God one day at a time, even one hour or one minute at a time. He can and will get you through whatever painful and tough circumstances you are facing.  Our God is an awesome God!

Would you like to join our prayer team? Join us on Thursdays at noon in the sanctuary to share prayer experiences with others!

I'm praying for you!
