Hurricane Ian Recovery Update
Joey DePetro, Church Facilities Manager
Bob Lukes, Building and Grounds Chairman
We continue to make progress repairing our Church Campus after Hurricane lan. Below is a summary.
The Church office and adjacent garage repairs were completed on March 1, 2023. The roof of the garage next to the classrooms, classroom roof, and sanctuary roof repairs were completed on May 15, 2023.
The Life Center roof shingle repair is about 80% complete. The South wall masonry has to be repaired before the south roof section can be repaired. Finding matching brick to repair the south wall is the issue right now.
The two new Life Center ten-ton A/C units to replace the units damaged during lan have been received. One damaged A/C unit was replaced on the northwest side of the Life Center. A bigger crane is needed to replace the A/C unit on the southeast side of the Life Center. Originally, we thought that the three painted glass protective windows on the south side of the Sanctuary needed to be replaced. Actually, the windows are OK, it was an ultraviolet (U/V) film that was torn which will cost much less to replace.
Concerning insurance cost recovery, we did receive insurance funds for repair of the two garages and the classroom building in December 2022. In April we received another settlement for removal of debris from the ten damaged or lost trees on the Church Campus. We submitted cost recovery to the insurance company on 6/1/23 for the mitigation work that was performed to protect church property until the buildings could be repaired. During the week of 6/19/23 we will be submitting to the insurance company invoices for repairs significantly over the insurance company deductible and depreciation formula.
After the Life Center masonry and south roof is repaired there are four other critical items that need to be repaired:
- Final repair of a Sanctuary beam.
- Repair or replacement of the handrails around the Life Center, and the Olympia Street stair handrail. Repair or replacement of the Lenox Hall roof hatch safety rail.
- Replace the Lenox Hall bathroom vent.
- Replace gutters and downspouts.
There is a list of 21 additional repair items that are not considered critical. Depending on Church Leadership Council and the Finance Committee approval, the Building and Grounds committee may budget for the 21 repairs in the 2024 and 2025 budgets. A sample of the non-critical repairs are.
- Replace the broken glass in the two exterior lights on Marion Avenue side of the Sanctuary.
- Start replacing Church Campus trees.
- Replace the torn sun curtain on the Lenox Hall west stairway.
- Repair the dumpster fence.
- Please continue to pray for our Church and community as we slowly recover from Hurricane lan.

Youth Mission Trip Update
The youth summer mission team would like to thank our New Life Church family for supporting us on our most recent mission trip to Texas. We served in the capital city of Austin from June 15th to the 23rd.
We had an amazing trip and wanted to thank you for donating the money so we could purchase air mattresses, pillows, and blankets. We used them while staying at our church housing site on our “Week of Hope” as its called. This was the 1st of 7 weeks of mission trips Group Cares Inc. will be hosting in Austin this summer. So we donated to the Group staff our mattresses to be used for the remainder of the summer at the Church Housing facility. At the conclusion of the summer (sometime in early August), the group missions staff will donate them to a local shelter in Austin.
Our teens will update the church during at an upcoming Sunday service on a few of the projects we were involved with this year.
We will include some pictures (similar to those pictured here in each of the next few additions of the Bridge newsletter so you can get a little glimpse of how we served in Jesus name during this trip.

A Word from Worship
Greetings New Life Church family --
As I sit here in prayer, thinking and reading scripture and devotionals, hoping God will lead me in a direction I might share with you, my heart is filled with gratitude and happiness. A visit with my sister last week, although too short, was a time of catching up and family memories. Planning for two new great grand babies before the Christmas holidays is a source of overwhelming joy and gratitude which make my heart swell. Hearing about answered prayer from the prayer team is always a huge gift from God. And, as I'm writing this on July 4th, I have to mention our worship service on July 2nd. I love when we have occasion for all members and guests to join together and share worship traditions in a combined service. It was great to see everyone who attended including new and familiar faces. The music was wonderful, and the message, as always was uplifting for us all. The picnic was a huge success, according to everyone I've talked with. The children's area was filled with fun activities, and in spite of the heat, everyone had a good time. A big round of applause for staff - Pastor Angela, and Joey, for their willingness to be dunked in the dunk tank. They got a break from a few of the tweens and teens who "volunteered" to get wet! A big "thank-you" to Joey and the volunteers who stepped up to help cook, setup, serve and clean up. It was a great day for everyone. But it was a statement of from one of our beautiful members who proudly mentioned that this 4th of July marks 75 years since she became an American citizen. In reading a devotional by Billy Graham I was thinking of the immigrants so long ago who left everything behind to come here and never take that hard won freedom for granted. It reminded me that it's what we must do when we come to Christ. We need to leave our allegiance to worldly things behind and become followers of the Kingdom of God. God's statue of liberty is in the form of the Cross! It is said that the statue in New York Harbor lifts her lamp "beside the golden door." The statue of liberty on that hill outside Jerusalem lights the way into eternal life. Our prayer is that the light of the Gospel shines through our hearts to be shared with others. John 8:36, "If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."
A reminder that we have new Offering Boxes located at each exit area in the Life Center to be used for your giving envelopes in lieu of passing the offering baskets.
The altar flowers this Sunday are given by Doris Diven and family in honor of husband James Diven who's Celebration of Life service is Saturday, 7/8/23 @ 11oclock in the sanctuary.
I'm praying for you!
