Endowment Team Grants
The Endowment Team will accept grant requests during the month of March from individuals or groups. The grants are intended to be a one time supplemental funding for "extras" beyond the regular budget. The original donors (two families in the 1990's) set up an Endowment Fund with a covenant that allows funds to be granted to specific areas of the First United Methodist Church programs. The grants are funded by a portion of the profits earned each year. The core is always maintained to have the fund be perpetually sound. In addition, 10% of it's profits are applied to the core each year. The Endowment Fund tithes too!

Please include a brief description of your program idea/ activity/ or materials you would like the Endowment Team to fund. Include goals, costs, and anticipated impact your plan will make on the participants, our church, and community. Requests must be received in the church office by March 31, 2022.

It will be necessary for you to be present at the Endowment team meeting in April to explain your proposal to the team and answer any questions regarding your request. Contact Phil Huddleston (941-258-4540) philhuddleston@embarqmail.com for details and procedures before you apply.

Recent grants: New Choir Robes, Youth Mission trips supplement, Children's Ministry special activities, UV and air filtration system to protect us from viruses throughout the campus.

What about your legacy to the church and community? Including the Endowment Fund in your estate planning will insure your gift will live on and touch lives for Christ.

A Word from Worship
Greetings 1st Church family --

Can I just tell you how blessed I feel to be part of a loving church family like we have! Greeting today for the Lenten service was another reminder of that gift. All I say is "good morning " and I get back from all of you hugs, sweet concerns about how I'm feeling, and so much love that my heart spills over with joy! Thank you.  You should give it a try! I'm not just trying to bribe you-- the blessings are beautiful. We need help at every service on Sundays and of course at the additional services during Lent. Please talk to me if you have questions.

One reminder, please wear your name tags.  It helps us to learn your name if you're new, and makes it easier for us to acknowledge individuals when large crowds arrive at the same time. Thanks for your help with this and let us know if you need to order one.

As you know, our focus this Lenten period is on prayer. You probably realize by now, that prayer is a huge part of my life, not just my faith life. In reading articles about prayer recently, God reminded me about an experience I had totally forgotten about. I was in 5th grade in Catholic school and there was a challenge to have us encourage our parents and siblings to recite the rosary every evening. Right!? Well it took courage and days but somehow I talked my parents into doing it! As I recall, it didn't last long, but maybe that was the seed for prayer being planted in me. I told you I'm a slow learner.  Now I can't imagine not turning to God in prayer for every situation from pleading to praise. Here are a few reminders that have helped me.. Prayer is talking to God. It's easy for us to complicate prayer, but it's not necessary. Access to God by prayer is possible through Jesus and what he has done. John14:6 says" I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Not simply by adding the name of Jesus at the end of a prayer, but to pray with the acknowledgement of what Jesus has done for us. It's normal to pray for things pertaining to our own lives, so it's easy to get repetitive. This can cause my mind to wander. I read once that to resolve this problem , we should pray the Bible, or to turn the words of scripture into prayer. The psalms are ideal for this, or, I've tried praying through parts of a scripture I've read. Of course, Jesus gave us the perfect model prayer in The Lord's Prayer, which is why I recommended that for our daily noon prayer challenge. Just imagine if everyone who worships here, or online and at the park joins us in this easy but mighty challenge! Invite your friends to join us.  I used to think prayer was a very private thing but I now feel it should be part of family life. Just as we pray together before a meal, I now know the huge blessing we get when husbands and wives , or family members pray together.  It has changed our lives!

Please watch for info on upcoming worship services and please let me know when you can help serve. Remember, I'm praying for you!

Sunday Lenten Bible Study
Beginning Sunday, March 20, The Harmony Class will begin a 4-session study, “Why Easter Matters” by Andy Stanley. In this Easter study Andy Stanley looks at some of the people whose lives intersected with Jesus in the weeks leading to his crucifixion. Each of them had an agenda that put them at odds with God and Jesus. As you’ll see, there’s a little bit of them in all of us. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Harmony Class will meet at 10:30 am in Room 9 on March 20 and in Lenox Hall the following three weeks.
Wednesday Lenten Bible Study
Join Pastor Earl Smith on Wednesdays from 10-11:30am for "Why Easter Matters by Andy Stanley. Books are $8 and will be available for purchase during the meeting time. All are invited to attend the Wednesday Lenten worship services that begin at noon after the Bible study. There will be no lunch served following worship as there has been in years past so the class members suggested that we could all bring a bag lunch to eat before we enter worship.
Wednesday Revelation Study
Join Larry Keller in Room 13 on Wednesdays from 6:30-8pm (and on Zoom). They will begin a new study on the book of Revelation March 16 using Revelation Unveiled by Tim Lahaye, Answers Bible Study from Answers in Genesis, and mostly The Bible.

It is recommended to purchase a copy of Revelation Unveiled for the study. All are invited!

The daily study guide is available free at the gathering. Many of the group come from other churches, so invite your friends.
