Pastor’s Reflection

Eighteenth Sunday in

Ordinary Time

The readings of this Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time speak to us of a God who sees our needs, has compassion on us, and nourishes us abundantly. In a world where many people experience physical, emotional, and spiritual hunger, the Word of God reminds us that only the Lord can satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart.

In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah extends a beautiful invitation from God: “All you who are thirsty, come to the water.” The Lord freely calls everyone, especially those who are weary, wounded, or empty within. So often we seek happiness in money, success, power, or fleeting pleasures, yet we remain unsatisfied. God asks us, “Why spend your money for what is not bread?” He desires to offer us food that gives true life and endures forever.

In the Gospel, Jesus multiplies the five loaves and two fish to feed a vast crowd. Before performing the miracle, the Gospel tells us that Jesus looked upon the people and was moved with compassion for them. Christ’s compassion is not merely a feeling; it is a love that takes action. He heals the sick, feeds the hungry, and restores hope to those who have lost it.

The disciples see the problem and suggest sending the crowd away. Jesus, however, tells them, “Give them some food yourselves.” These words continue to echo in the Church today. The Lord calls us to share our talents, our time, our faith, and our resources with those who are most in need. We may think that we have very little to offer, just as the disciples had only five loaves and two fish. Yet when we generously place our limited gifts into the hands of Jesus, He can accomplish wonders.

This miracle also points us to the Eucharist. Jesus took the loaves, blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples. These actions foreshadow His gift of Himself at the Last Supper and in every Holy Mass. In the Eucharist, Christ continues to feed His people with the Bread of Life. Those who come to Him in faith will never remain spiritually hungry.

Finally, Saint Paul offers us a profound source of consolation: nothing can separate us from the love of God revealed in Christ Jesus. Neither hardships, trials, nor sufferings have the final word. God’s love remains faithful forever.

Let us ask the Lord to increase our trust in His providence. May we never forget that He is able to multiply our efforts, console us in our needs, and satisfy the deepest hunger of our souls. And may we, nourished by the Eucharist, become instruments of His love for others.

Word of the Week: Theophany

A theophany is a visible, tangible, and sudden appearance or manifestation of a deity to a human. The word comes from two Greek words meaning "God" and "to appear". It describes special moments when people see or experience God directly through physical forms or powerful natural events (for example, the Transfiguration of Jesus).

2026 Annual Mission Cooperative Appeal

This Weekend, August 1–2

St. Patrick's Parish is honored to welcome Fr. Niranjan (Niru) Kanmury of the Diocese of Nalgonda, India, as part of the 2026 Annual Mission Cooperative Plan. Fr. Niranjan will preach at all Masses on August 1–2 and share the missionary work of his diocese.

Ordained in 2001, Fr. Niranjan served in parish ministry in India before completing doctoral studies in Biblical Theology at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. Since 2017, he has ministered in the Diocese of San Diego and now serves as Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.

The Diocese of Nalgonda, located in southern India, continues a rich missionary tradition while serving families through evangelization, catechesis, charitable outreach, and Catholic education. This year's Mission Appeal will support Catholic schools that are facing significant financial challenges. Your generosity will help provide tuition assistance for students in need, educational resources, and improvements to school facilities, ensuring that these schools continue to form young people in faith and academic excellence.

A Note from Fr Ron

I am pleased to share with you the good news that three months after my radiation treatments, the tests indicate very good results. I will continue to have testing every three months for the next year. But I give thanks to God for healing grace. And thank all of you for your prayers and expressions of concern.

I am also very grateful for the many birthday wishes and gifts that I received recently. May God continue to bless us all.

Child of God

On Saturday, July 25, we had the joy of welcoming Clydine Peterson into the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. Although she is 91 years old, she is now a child of God in faith. Congratulations to Clydine and to her sponsor Earl.

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)

Our OCIA sessions will begin (in English) on Sunday, September 13. Those who wish to join the Catholic Church or who are Catholic adults who have not been confirmed are encouraged to join.

The Mark Anderson Community Service Memorial Scholarship

The Knights of Columbus are pleased to announce the 1st annual Mark Anderson Scholarship Program. This scholarship is based on a written 1000-word essay on the applicant’s concept of service to the community, demonstrating the ideals and example set by Brother Mark Anderson's involvement in Community Service, and examples of how the candidate demonstrates service to their community.

Competition is open to High School students whose families are members of the St. Patrick Catholic Community (or those who will be attending in Fall 2026) in grades 9 to 12. Scholarships range from a minimum of a $500 one-time grant to a $2,500 one-time grant. Scholarship Applications, and more information on the program can be obtained at the Church Office. The deadline for completed applications is October 5, 2026.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today we jump ahead in our reading of Matthew's Gospel to Chapter 14. Last week we heard Jesus conclude his discourse with the crowds about the Kingdom of Heaven. In Matthew's narrative, Jesus then leaves the crowds and returns to Nazareth, where he is rejected. Matthew then recounts the story of John the Baptist's arrest and execution at the hands of Herod. Today's Gospel reading begins at this point.

Upon hearing the news of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus seeks to withdraw, but the crowds follow him. Jesus reaches out to them in compassion and heals the sick. At the end of a long day, the disciples encourage Jesus to send the crowds away so that they might find provisions for themselves. Jesus again responds with compassion for the crowd. Jesus tells his disciples to provide food for the crowd. The disciples reply with a report of the meagerness of their own provisions—five loaves and two fish. The result is the very familiar miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish. Matthew's Gospel tells us that 5,000 men were fed, and this number does not even include the women and children.

Jesus' blessing brought abundance from the meager provisions of the disciples. In this action, Jesus offers us a sign of the Kingdom of Heaven that he has been teaching about in the parables. A feast results from the smallest of portions—remember the mustard seed and the yeast. In this miracle we witness an example for Christian life and ministry. Even the smallest of offerings can produce abundant results when placed in the service of the Kingdom of Heaven.

We find the story of Jesus' multiplication of the loaves and the fish in each of the four Gospels. In the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, Jesus performs this same miracle on two separate occasions. The story of this miracle is an anticipation of the Eucharist in which we are fed by the abundant grace of God. The importance of the Eucharist has been a defining element of Christian life from the very beginning.

The Ye Olde Garage Will Reopen on Monday, August 3

Family Night Spaghetti Dinner

The Knights of Columbus are holding a Family Night Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, August 22 at 5:30 pm.. Ticket sales will begin July 25 on the patio after Masses. Tickets will also be available in the Parish office. Price is $20 per person, children 10 and under are free. Proceeds will go to support our Parish Youth Programs. Tickets are limited so purchase yours early. There will also be a blow-up slide for the kids.

Religious Education Preschool to 8th grade

Registration Information for the 2026-2027 School Year

We are here to support parents in forming their children in the Catholic Faith and engaging them in our parish community where we worship and grow together in faith. We offer weekly classes for preschool through 8th grade and preparation for the sacraments for children in grades 1 through 8.

The online registration is open for all our classes from Preschool through 8th grade.

Confirmation Registration

Now Open

Our Confirmation program is a two-year journey! To get started for the 2026–2027 school year, teens must be entering high school (9th grade or higher).

New Students: If you did not participate last year, please register for the Pre-Confirmation Year.
Returning Students: If you completed the first year, please register for the Confirmation Year.

This is the first of three registration tiers our office will offer for the 2026–2027 school year. Tier 1 runs from May 20th through June 30th and offers the lowest registration fee. Please note that fees will increase after June 30th.

Families can register either online or in person. If you prefer to register in person, please contact our office to schedule a time.

Notas Pastorales

XVIII Domingo Ordinario

Las lecturas de este XVIII Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario nos hablan de un Dios que ve nuestras necesidades, se compadece de nosotros y nos alimenta con abundancia. En un mundo donde muchas personas experimentan hambre física, emocional y espiritual, la Palabra de Dios nos recuerda que sólo el Señor puede satisfacer los deseos más profundos del corazón humano.

En la primera lectura, el profeta Isaías nos dirige una hermosa invitación de parte de Dios: “Todos los que tienen sed, vengan por agua.” El Señor llama gratuitamente a todos, especialmente a quienes están cansados, heridos o vacíos por dentro. Muchas veces buscamos la felicidad en el dinero, el éxito, el poder o los placeres pasajeros, pero terminamos sintiéndonos insatisfechos. Dios nos pregunta: “¿Por qué gastar el dinero en lo que no alimenta?” Él desea ofrecernos un alimento que da vida verdadera y que permanece para siempre.

En el Evangelio, Jesús multiplica los cinco panes y los dos peces para alimentar a una multitud inmensa. Antes de realizar el milagro, el Evangelio nos dice que Jesús vio a la gente y sintió compasión por ella. La compasión de Cristo no es un simple sentimiento; es un amor que actúa. Él cura a los enfermos, alimenta a los hambrientos y devuelve la esperanza a quienes la han perdido.

Los discípulos ven el problema y proponen despedir a la multitud. Jesús, en cambio, les dice: “Denles ustedes de comer.” Estas palabras siguen resonando hoy en la Iglesia. El Señor nos llama a compartir nuestros talentos, nuestro tiempo, nuestra fe y nuestros recursos para ayudar a quienes más lo necesitan. Quizás pensemos que tenemos muy poco para ofrecer, como los cinco panes y dos peces de los discípulos. Sin embargo, cuando ponemos generosamente lo poco que tenemos en las manos de Jesús, Él puede hacer maravillas.

Este milagro también nos recuerda la Eucaristía. Jesús tomó los panes, pronunció la bendición, los partió y los entregó. Estos gestos anticipan el don de sí mismo en la Última Cena y en cada Santa Misa. En la Eucaristía, Cristo continúa alimentando a su pueblo con el Pan de Vida. Quien se acerca a Él con fe nunca queda espiritualmente hambriento.

Finalmente, San Pablo nos ofrece una gran fuente de consuelo: nada podrá separarnos del amor de Dios manifestado en Cristo Jesús. Ni las dificultades, ni las pruebas, ni los sufrimientos tienen la última palabra. El amor de Dios permanece siempre fiel.

Pidamos al Señor que aumente nuestra confianza en su providencia. Que nunca olvidemos que Él es capaz de multiplicar nuestros esfuerzos, consolar nuestras necesidades y saciar el hambre más profunda de nuestra alma. Y que, alimentados por la Eucaristía, aprendamos a ser instrumentos de su amor para los demás.
