FIRE FIGHTER CANCER AWARENESS MONTH ENDS WITH A PLEDGE
The IAFF and FCSN’s first Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month has ended, but our work is far from over. We encourage those who were not able to commit to safety stand downs in the month of January to schedule one (or more).

To further solidify your ongoing commitment to the prevention of fire fighter occupational cancer, we invite you to sign the online pledge and encourage you to use the Reason for Signing section to honor those we have lost to – or are currently fighting – occupational cancer.

Use the I Took the Pledge Photo as your Facebook profile picture or as a post on Instagram or Twitter with the link to our pledge site (and the hashtag #FightFFCancer) to encourage others to sign the pledge!

Nearly Five Dozen FDNY Firefighters Injured in Harlem Fire
Around 200 firefighters and EMS workers battled a massive apartment building fire that injured 58 firefighters, sending 11 to a burn center with two in serious condition.

NEW YORK—Plans to renovate a languishing, city-owned Harlem apartment building went up in smoke after a massive fire tore through the property Saturday morning — injuring almost two dozen firefighters battling the blaze in the frosty January air.

The flames erupted in an empty first-floor apartment at the W. 115th Street building — located about a half block from Morningside Park — around 7:30 a.m. as temperatures dropped to 20 degrees, officials said.
“I heard someone say ‘Fire! Fire!’ but I’m thinking like maybe it’s another building,” third-floor resident Samiya Robinson told the Daily News. “I opened the front door and it was just like smoking.”
Robinson, 21, alerted her family and her 88-year-old grandmother on the first floor before racing out of the building.

“When we came out and got to the front door, that first-floor apartment was just in flames,” she recalled. “The fire just destroyed everything in that apartment.”
Firefighters smashed windows on all the floors to ventilate the heat as smoke curled out of the openings.

“The fire quickly extended to all floors all the way up to the top floor,” FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Thomas Richardson said. “We wound up going eventually to a fourth alarm assignment.”

Important CPF Affiliate Leadership Meeting February 17th

The cloud of COVID-19 and the impact it is having on our members' lives and livelihoods continues to command the attention of our unions throughout the state.

All the more reason why it is important for affiliates to gather for this winter's CPF District Meeting. District meetings allow affiliate leaders to come together to compare successes and challenges from one end of the state to the other. Indeed, given the widespread impact of the pandemic -- as well as the upcoming fire season -- the statewide view has never been more important.
For this reason, CPF has decided to combine the gatherings into a single joint statewide CPF Virtual District Meeting. You'll get a chance to hear from your brothers and sisters around the state as well as hearing from CPF leadership updating on critical information, from vaccine distribution to your firefighter legislative priorities for the coming session.
