This Sunday we hear the story of the rich man and Lazarus. The unnamed wealthy man is often called Dives, from the Latin word for “rich” or “splendid.” The Chancel Choir men will sing Vaughan Williams’ setting of the English carol Dives and Lazarus, which retells the parable in song.
In the carol, Dives holds a great feast while the poor man Lazarus waits at his door, begging for food and drink. Dives refuses, denying any kinship with Lazarus, and even orders his servants to whip him and set the dogs upon him. But the servants cannot harm Lazarus, and the dogs instead lick his sores in compassion. In the end, when both men die, Lazarus is carried by angels to heaven, while Dives is dragged by serpents to hell.
To balance the program, the women of the Chancel Choir will sing the introit — Mendelssohn’s radiant setting of Psalm 121 from Elijah, Lift thine eyes.

The Mangochi room is humming with activity the first and third Fridays of each month.
The Sewing Sisters for Mission are busy working on their various projects. Colorful skirts are made and matched with coordinated colored T-shirts. Sets have gone to Memorial Park Church to be taken on a mission trip to Sierra Leone.
Hygiene kits consisting of six washable pads, two pairs of underwear, and a washcloth in a colorful bag drawstring bag have gone to the Honduras Hope Project.
These simple items have been lovingly prepared by the Sewing Sisters, a dedicated group of Northmont women.

Our first night back for the new program was a great success!
The kids got a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the church, while the grown ups and big kids had tacos, puzzles, and some great conversation!
Looking forward to October. 😁
