Welcome to the April 2021 edition of our Council newsletter!

We have some important news to announce about our 50th Anniversary celebration, so please read-on!

As usual, here are a few quick but important items up-front before we get into the news.

  • Our next regular business meeting will be this Wednesday, April 14th, starting at 7:30 p.m. All members are welcome. We'll be serving dinner for members at 6:30. Any member who wishes to participate by Zoom should send our webmaster an email (please don't wait for the last minute!) and he'll send you the link.

  • Council Cleanup Sat. April 24th: We will be doing a much needed spring cleaning inside and out starting at 9 a.m. Not only will we be doing our usual outdoor cleanup, but we'll be doing a thorough post-Fish Fry kitchen cleaning (including the vent hood) and we may also be cleaning out the attic. So this is an "all-hands-on-deck" call-out for a cleaning crew.

  • Membership Degree Rescheduled: The combined exemplification that was tentatively scheduled for last March has been rescheduled to May 23rd starting at 1 p.m. If you know of a practical Catholic gentleman age 18 or older who wishes to join, have him contact our Membership Director, John Nuculovic, or GK Ralph as soon as possible to submit an application and be interviewed.

  • Health Reminder: Please use good judgment in deciding whether to come to the Council for meetings or events. Stay home if you are not feeling well. Please do not come to the Council if you have been in contact with people who have tested positive for COVID-19 or who have symptoms of COVID-19; or if you have been in close contact with people who are in quarantine or isolation, or with people who may have been recently exposed to a COVID-19 positive individual. All persons entering the Council are expected to observe social distancing and wear face coverings when and where appropriate.

We're thrilled to be able to hold our fantastic George Dean Memorial Annual Golf Outing on Friday, June 11, 2021!

In addition to a great round of golf at Putnam County Golf Course, you'll get a delicious lunch, beverage cart, golfer SWAG, prizes, and our own sumptuous filet mignon dinner, all for only $150.

Sponsorships are available: Hole Sponsor ($150, or $100 with a foursome), Lunch Sponsor ($500); Dinner Sponsor ($750) and Platinum Sponsor ($1000).

Registration is 8 a.m.; shotgun start at 9 a.m. Cocktails and dinner for golfers at our council immediately following the outing.

Prizes will be awarded for best foursome, longest drive, and closest to the pin.

This is our annual major fundraiser that enables our council to do the many charitable, community and parish activities that we do on a regular basis. Please support this event by golfing, taking a sponsorship, donating prizes, or helping us get others to do the same.

Bye-Bye Fish Fry - But Just for 2021!

Our Council's 2021 Lenten Fish Fry is over and it was an amazing success thanks to our many loyal supporters and our team of dedicated volunteers.

So here’s a great big "THANK YOU" to you all from our devoted Fish Fry Crew!

We served well over 1,300 meals over the first six Fridays of Lent, all of them made hot and fresh to order, and ready for pick-up ON TIME. The challenges posed by the lingering effects of the pandemic could not deter us from helping our parishioners fulfill their Lenten obligations with high-quality, affordable, varied, and (dare we say) delicious fish meals every Friday.

We were also honored to be able to deliver dinner to our parish's clergy every Friday. And even though we were officially closed on Good Friday, members of our Fish Fry Crew cooked up a special batch of New England Clam Chowder (Msgr. Marchitelli's favorite, we hear) just for our priests to enjoy.

Never resting on our laurels, we are already planning for Fish Fry 2022, when we expect to re-open our dining room, but maintain aspects of the current pre-ordering system. This way whether you are eating-in or taking out, your meal will be ready when you want it, without any long waits.

In the coming weeks we will let the membership know about the charities and causes that will benefit from our Fish Fry proceeds. We don't do our Fish Fry primarily as a fundraiser, and that's why we can keep our prices low. (Where else can you get a big order of Lobster Mac & Cheese or 3 mahi-mahi tacos & chips for only $12?)

But thanks to our loyal supporters and the careful planning by our Crew to buy wholesale and avoid waste, we were again able to raise several thousand dollars which will be donated to worthy charities serving our area.

Since "feedback is a gift," please tell our Grand Knight or members of the Fish Fry Crew how we did, what you liked, and what you'd like to see next year.

So thanks again for all of your support, and we hope to see you all again next year!
Our Golden Anniversary Gala is November 6th, 2021!

Did you know that our Council was founded almost 50 years ago, on November 4, 1971?

So, we'll be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our Council in a very special way at this year's Annual Dinner Dance and Awards Ceremony on November 6th!

While the planning for this momentous event has been in the works for several years, everything had to be put on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions. But as soon as things started to open up again, we moved quickly to make sure that our "Golden Gala" would not only happen as scheduled but be an event to remember.

Our celebration will be at the beautiful Ethan Allen Hotel in Danbury, and feature a cocktail hour, open bar, buffet diner, photo booth, and live entertainment. We are also securing a block of rooms for overnight lodging at a special rate.

Full details will be provided shortly in a separate email, but it is very important that you make your dinner reservations early, and even more important that you book your hotel rooms early if you plan on taking advantage of the special rate.

We are also planning to have a large-format, color souvenir journal this year. Advertisers and sponsors will want to be a part of this special publication, so watch for the opportunity to take out an ad for your business, honor a special person or group, or congratulate the Council on five decades of Charity, Unity and Fraternity.

We are also putting the call-out for photographs of our Council's members and events from throughout our 50-year history. (The older, the better!) If you have any special photos you'd like to share, please contact GK Ralph.

Putnam's Hometown Heroes Banner Project Now Under Way!

Hundreds of banners recognizing Putnam’s veterans -- past and present -- will soon be adorning light poles from Mahopac and Carmel through the Town of Kent.
 
Last year, as part of a Girl Scouts Gold Award project, 50 banners were placed on light poles in the greater Mahopac area to honor our local “Home Town Heroes.” Inspired by that project, a number of volunteers and officials have teamed up to recognize veterans year-round with banners to be placed on utility poles throughout Putnam County.
 
Members of the committee include two of our Ladies Auxiliary Past Presidents, Gail Driscoll Silke and Maria Barry. Gail joined the committee to honor her brother, Stephen Driscoll, one of eight Putnam residents who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks in lower Manhattan 20 years ago.

As Gail explained, “Besides being a NYPD Emergency Services Unit officer, Steve enlisted in the Navy when he turned 18 to serve his country. Sadly, veterans are sometimes forgotten about and I want the world to know that in Putnam County we never forget.”

Maria’s father, Kevin H. Ross, was killed during the Vietnam War. She explained that she got involved with the project because, "Thinking back, I never really knew my dad but the patriotic banners will honor him, Gail’s brother, and others serving today, and who have served in the past, by thanking them for their sacrifices that have resulted in the freedoms we have.”
 
Please join Putnam County in honoring and saying “Thank You” to our military personnel by sponsoring a banner. They will be displayed from the Westchester County line in Baldwin Place, through the hamlets of Mahopac and Carmel, into Kent and up to the Dutchess County line in Stormville.
 
These banners will allow our community to honor all military members who are serving, those who have served, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation. Click here to visit the program's information page.

Once there you will be able to click through to the sponsorship page to order a banner to honor a veteran. Be sure to select "Carmel" or "Kent" in the “Display Location” drop-down menu, in the Sponsorship Payment Section, so they know where to display your banner.

Cash Bingo Returns April 25 and May 16!

Our Ladies Auxiliary's first Cash Bingo of 2021 on March 21st was a hit, and they're doing it again on April 25th and May 16th.

Doors open at 1 p.m. and the first game begins at 2 p.m. The cost is $30. As always, proceeds are donated to worthy charities.

Fourth Degree News

MEETING NOTICE

The next meeting of Mother Cabrini Assembly will be Thursday, April 15th at our Council.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Our Worthy FN informs us that pizza will be served for Assembly members starting around 6:30 p.m. All Fourth Degree Sir Knights are welcome and encouraged to attend the meeting.







  • Scholarship Applications: Click here to download the instructions and applications for our Council Scholarships. We award them to graduating high school seniors who are pursuing full-time higher education. The deadline for submission of applications is May 1st. Contact GK Ralph Fleischman with any questions.

  • Council Fishing Trip: Worthy Guard George Kane is organizing a fishing trip with Sound Bound Charters out of New Rochelle, planned for the night of Wednesday, May 26. Speak with George or GK Ralph if you are interested. No matter how many fish are caught, we're sure to have a boatload of fun!

  • Founders Day BBQ May 28 (Fri.): Our annual summer-kickoff BBQ is back, and we will continue the tradition of honoring a deserving member with the Angelo Trongone Award for distinguished service. More details will be announced as we get closer to the date, but plan to be there and bring the whole family! Volunteers will be needed for prep, cooking, serving and cleanup.
