Welcome to the October edition of our council newsletter! Here's a quick (but important!) meeting reminder before we get into the news: Our regular monthly business meeting is this Wednesday, October 10th, starting at 7:30 p.m. We'll be serving dinner for only $5 starting around 6:30 p.m. (If you loved our Oktoberfest schnitzel - or missed it - you'll want to come for dinner!)

Our EVENT OF THE YEAR : Annual Dinner Dance & Awards Ceremony - Nov. 3rd Join us for our 47th Anniversary Annual Dinner Dance and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, November 3rd at 7 p.m ! Fine dining, LIVE MUSIC, LIVE ENTERTAINMENT, NEW CATERER , dancing, raffles, and recognition of our members who do so much to make our Council so special.   The last two years were such a great success that we are once again holding our Annual in the St. James school gymnasium so we have plenty of room to spread out, dance, and host the band and a special guest performer. This year's Annual promises to be MEMORABLE and HUGE FUN, so get in your reservation today! (RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST!)   You loved 'em, you wanted 'em back, and we're proud to once again feature the musical stylings of SOULMATES ("Music from the Heart and Soul")! And our last two comedy nights were so popular that we're booking a special comedy performance. Also back by popular demand is our PHOTO BOOTH! (Bring your funniest face or take a nice couples' shot for a memento.)   And this year we have all new catering by Sauro's Town Square Cafe , featuring outstanding Italian cuisine including antipasto, hot appetizers, a hot buffet dinner, and fine desserts. Plus, since nobody does a carving station better than we do, we'll be serving hand-carved filet mignon with dinner prepared by our own in-house chefs! If you've enjoyed our masterpiece of charcoal grilled prime beef at the Council Golf Outing, Men's Beefsteak, or the Ladies Auxiliary Appreciation Dinner, you know that this is something really special!   As usual, the night will start at 7 p.m. with a cocktail hour with plenty of hors d’oeuvres, followed by a great buffet dinner, our brief awards ceremony, live entertainment and dancing, and delicious desserts & coffee. Our Annual Dinner Dance & Awards Ceremony is our opportunity to recognize and appreciate those who have given outstanding and dedicated service to our Council. In addition to important service awards, we present our Council's highest annual award to a deserving member: "Knight of the Year." We also honor a Brother Knight and his family who exemplify the true spirit of the Knights of Columbus as the "Family of the Year." On this the occasion of our 47th Anniversary, we are proud to now announce our 2018 Knight of the Year and Family of the Year. Please join us in congratulating them, and show your support by attending our Annual to celebrate them together as a council.

Presenting our 2018 Knight of the Year: SK Joseph Groneman This year's Knight of the Year is our own Worthy Treasurer, Sir Knight Joseph L. Groneman ! Joe is a Fourth Degree Sir Knight celebrating his 30th year as a member of our Council, and has provided decades of devoted service and friendship. He has served as our Worthy Treasurer for 21 years (!) and also served as Treasurer for our Home Corporation, 6318 Associates, for 19 years. Joe is truly our best source of "institutional memory," who informs the leadership team about the good times and not-so-good times, and what's worked and hasn't worked, over the last three decades at our Council. Joe has also been a tireless volunteer, and not just with handling the money and doing the accounting. Joe is a hands-on brother Knight who helps out wherever needed, even including the kitchen! Joe is also an important volunteer every year at the St. James Feast, where he puts his professional qualifications as an accountant into great service for our parish. We're sure you will agree Joe is very deserving of this award!

Presenting our 2018 Family of the Year: The Crecco Family

This year's Family of the Year is the Crecco Family - John, Kim, Bryan and Johnny! John is a Third Degree member who only joined our Council in 2015, but in a short time he's become an active member and enthusiastic supporter of our Council. Fortunately for us, he has involved his entire family. His wife Kim is an active member of our Ladies Auxiliary. Together, you know them as the musical duet Soulmates ("Music from the Heart and Soul") , who have become a hugely popular in Putnam County and well beyond! John and Kim both work at the Rockland Campus of the BOCES Alternative High School. John has been a music teacher for 26 years, and Kim is a crisis intervention teacher with 31 years of service. Sons Bryan (age 16) and Johnny (age 14) can be found at our many family-friendly events, and all four are members of the Driscoll Memorial Pipe Band. The Crecco Family also includes two more members of our Council: John's twin brothers Stephen Crecco and James Crecco . Steve joined us in 2017 and James made it a hat trick earlier this year. Now that's family spirit! So join us at the Annual on November 3rd as we present them with our Council's highest honor for families!

Another Wunderbar Oktoberfest! If you missed our Oktoberfest last Saturday, you missed an awesome time ! About 150 guests enjoyed authentic German food, German beers, live German music, contests, raffles, door prizes, and lots of fun in our beer hall, lounge, and outdoor beer garden. Starters included hot Bavarian pretzels with our homemade beer-cheese dipping sauce, potato pancakes with applesauce, and German Sliders made with beer-boiled and charcoal grilled bratwurst, served with our own special kapusta (sauerkraut). Our beer selections included Spaten Ur-Märzen, Sam Adams Oktoberfest, and Franziskaner Hefeweizen. And best of all was our homemade full Wiener Schnitzel dinner with all the sides (red cabbage, mashed potatoes, green beans amandine, hunter gravy, pumpernickel rolls), with fresh apple strudel a la mode for dessert. Nobody left hungry! As in years past, the music from the famous Austrian Boys Band was fantastic! We also had a blast cheering on the contestants in the traditional stein-lifting contests for men and ladies. Prizes for the winners, and for our best-dressed contest, were authentic German beer steins donated by PGK John Adams. A great door prize of Rangers hockey tickets was courtesy of Worthy Lecturer Anthony Falco. Thanks to all of our guests for making this another smash-hit event, and special thanks to our team of hardworking chefs, servers, decorators, and other volunteers led by our event chair and Schnitzelmeister , Mike Bock.

All Aboard for Mohegan Sun - October 13! LAST CALL for our next great Mario Antoci Memorial Mohegan Sun Casino Excursion on Saturday, October 13th ! For only $40 you get transportation, a $15 lunch voucher (which gets you a fantastic buffet!), and $10 casino match play. Start with coffee and donuts at the council at 7 a.m. Bus leaves our council at 8:00 a.m. sharp . Enjoy a six-hour stay at the casino. Beer, soda and water will be provided on the bus. Bring whatever you like to snack and drink.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theater - Oct. 20th Our Ladies Auxiliary is hosting our first-ever Murder Mystery Dinner Theater . Join us in our Council Hall on Saturday, October 20th for a night of great food and a fun, interactive comedy performance where YOU are part of the show! Catering is by the fantastic Luigi's Famiglia Cucina of Carmel! All proceeds go to local charities, and our 50/50 raffle proceeds will benefit the Putnam County Veterans Service Medal committee! This is a prepaid event, so you must reserve in advance . Cost for dinner, a drink (beer or wine), and the show is only $50.00 per person, or $360 for a table of eight (save $5 a head!). A cash bar will also be available. You must be there promptly at 6:30 p.m.!!! Please get in your payment October 12th. AND NOW, ABOUT OUR PROGRAM Homestyle Homicide: the Freagan Family Reunion Come a runnin', cousins, 'cause it's time again for the annual family reunion and the whole Freagan family is gonna be there! We're gonna have vittles, singin', hootin' and hollerin' and, of course, no family gathering would be complete without the annual pig-calling contest! Dang, you might even win a big ol' slop bucket full of money! Yeehaw! Best watch your step on the farm this year, though. Pa's been hitting the moonshine a might too hard and is about to lose the farm to that no good snake, Beauregard Hogwallerin! When the girls find out, somebody could end up on the barbecue!

Fourth Degree News MEETING NOTICE The next meeting of the Fourth Degree Sir Knights will be Thursday, October 18th at 7:30 p.m. at our Council. All Sir Knights should attend!

Passing of Paul Trongone We are deeply saddened to report the passing of our brother Knight, Paul Trongone, who passed away on September 26th at the age of 61 after a very long battle with a brain tumor. Paul was a member of our council for 42 years, and was the son of our founding Grand Knight Angelo Trongone, to whom our building is dedicated in memoriam. Paul's obituary may be found here . Please join with us in praying for the repose of his immortal soul, and for the comfort of his family, friends and loved ones, especially his wife Sally Ann, his son Paul Angelo, his mother Bianca, and his sisters Elena and Gina.

We Honor the Namesake of our Order! Thank you to all of our members and brothers from other councils, friends, and family who marched with the Knights of Columbus in the Putnam County Columbus Day Parade in Mahopac on Sunday, September 30th. It was a picture-perfect day for a parade, and Putnam's Italian-American pride was on full display! Thanks also to our members who helped prepare and serve a hearty "Sunday Gravy" pasta and meatball luncheon at our council that afternoon for the returning marchers and our other guests. This Monday was officially Columbus Day. Christopher Columbus is the namesake of our Order, and the Knights of Columbus proudly celebrate this holiday. In doing so we honor his heroic efforts and also the culture and heritage of the Italian people, and their many contributions to America.

Sunday Cash Bingo on 10/28 to Benefit Putnam REACT Join us for another great afternoon of Sunday Cash Bingo presented by our Ladies Auxiliary on October 28th! All monies raised will go to support the Dutchess & Putnam REACT . Since 1995, Dutchess and Putnam County REACT Team # 4938 has been serving our community. REACT provides public service communications to individuals, organizations, and government agencies to save lives, prevent injuries, and give assistance wherever and whenever needed. They strive to establish a monitoring network of trained volunteer citizen-based communicators using any and all available means to deliver the message. REACT provides assistance for a variety of public events including parades, runs, walk-a-thons, and bike tours, as well as for disaster-related situations. As always, our bingo features big cash payouts and a $500 jackpot ! Admission is only $30. Doors open at 1 p.m., first game at 2 p.m. Attendance is limited to the first 100 players. Domestic Violence Awareness Event - Monday, Oct. 22: The Women's Resource Center of Putnam County is holding a Candlelight Vigil Against Domestic Violence at 6:00 p.m. on the Historic County Courthouse steps in Carmel. After short opening proceedings, a candlelight procession will lead to our Council Hall (10 Fair Street) for presentations concerning the scourge of domestic violence (DV) in our communities, programs available to survivors of DV, representatives of our local and state governments, officials from the Putnam Sheriff's Department, Town of Carmel PD, Town of Kent PD, NYS State Police, Putnam's District Attorney's office, and other official organizations who help protect us from DV. In the even of bad weather, all proceedings will take place in our Council Hall. Seminarian's Dinner - Monday, Nov. 5: We will once again be supporting our diocese's seminarians at St. Joseph's Seminary (Dunwoodie) by taking a table and a journal ad for the annual Westchester-Putnam Chapter Charities Seminarian's Dinner at Fr. Dunphy Council in White Plains. The cost is $40 per person and dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. Speak with GK Steve if you are interested in attending.
