Dr. Ketrell McWhorter recently lead a public health brigade of students in the Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG) program, which is a UK Global Health Initiatives organization that integrates academic and community partners to improve the health and well-being of an underserved community in Santo Domingo, Ecuador. Students gave public health education talks on mental health, general hygiene, reproductive health, and drug addiction.

Dr. Rada Choate, Research Assistant Professor in DEEH and UK Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center REC Scholar, was recently accepted to The Alzheimer’s Association Interdisciplinary Summer Research Institute (AA-ISRI) which is an NIH-funded exclusive experience for early career researchers in Alzheimer's disease and related dementia. Only twenty-four applicants are selected yearly and will take place at the Alzheimer's Association home office in Chicago, IL in August 2022.

CPH welcomes a new faculty member, Dr. Hongbin Zhang, to the department of Biostatistics (BST), effective July 1, which further demonstrates public health’s commitment to promoting biostatisticians as team scientists.

Dr. Joseph Benitez's new published paper in the JAMA Health Forum covers changes in health insurance coverage among adult workers in states with expanded Medicaid eligibility guidelines against workers in states that did not expand Medicaid during the COVID-19 crisis.

Dr. Serenity Wright, Associate Director of Social Innovation at UK Innovate, will be available to chat with CPH faculty and staff members on June 29th. This Meet & Greet allows those who may be interested in social entrepreneurial thinking, planning, and creating for their endeavors to resolve public health issues and disparities.

The Kentucky Drug Overdose Surveillance program provides timely reports on the morbidity and mortality associated with drug overdose in the Commonwealth. An update to the annual report on drug overdose deaths in Kentucky includes deaths that occurred in 2021, which was the first year where the opioid drug overdose death rates was higher among black Kentuckians than among white Kentuckians.

This important position manages the College of Public Health (CPH) Alumni programs and works to cultivate relationships with alumni through events, programming, communications and internal/external collaborations, and much more. Position is open until July 7th and referrals will be available starting July 8th.

Dr. Xiaoran Tong is a post-doc research fellow in (NIEHS) Biostatistics and Computational Biology Branch (BCBB) and will be presenting on the topic, "Advancing Youth Health via CANS Machine Learning" on Tuesday, June 28.

Prior to joining the institute, he was trained in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Michigan State University (MSU), where his Ph.D. research focused on developing machine learning methods to jointly analyze high-dimensional medical imaging and genetic polymorphism data for complex diseases.
