Sunday Services

October is upon us, ushering in cooler fall temperatures and bringing many back to MVUU from their summer sojourns. We welcome the changing in temperature and the many members and friends returning!

Our Baja 4 Desert Ritual Year (DRY), brings us a focus on Forgiveness and the Jewish faith tradition. We will weave these teachings in and around what we know here at MVUU of forgiveness and how it brings about new potential for all our futures.

Oct 27 "The Raven"

Rev. Matthew, Samar Adi, & Linda Logan

We return to Edgar Allen Poe's classic poem to explore the meaning of relationship and support within community through times of grief.

Autumn Reflections in Southern Arizona

As fall arrives in Tucson, we experience a gentle shift—cooler mornings and crisper evenings, offering a welcome shift from the heat of summer. The change in season invites us to slow down and reflect. Much like the desert landscape preparing for winter, this time of year encourages us to pause and consider the transitions in our own lives.

We can draw inspiration from the natural world, finding meaning in its rhythms. The cooler weather can be a time for reflection—whether it's on personal growth, the passage of time, dealing with grief or the beauty of change. Just as the desert plants adapt to the season, we, too, can embrace the opportunity to let go of what no longer serves us and make space for renewal.

As we enter this season of cooler days and longer nights, may we find peace in the stillness and comfort in our shared journey through life’s many transitions.

The Sunday Book Group on Zoom

On Sunday September 22 we will begin discussing our new book: “Why Materialism Is Baloney” by Bernardo Kastrup. “The present framing of the cultural debate in terms of materialism versus religion has allowed materialism to go unchallenged as the only rationally-viable metaphysics. This book uncovers the absurd implications of materialism and then, uniquely, presents a hard-nosed non-materialist metaphysics substantiated by skepticism, hard empirical evidence, and clear logical argumentation. It lays out a coherent framework upon which one can interpret and make sense of every natural phenomenon and physical law, as well as the modalities of human consciousness, without materialist assumptions. According to this framework, the brain is merely the image of a self-localization process of mind, analogously to how a whirlpool is the image of a self-localization process of water. The brain doesn't generate mind in the same way that a whirlpool doesn't generate water. It is the brain that is in mind, not mind in the brain. Physical death is merely a de-clenching of awareness. The book closes with a series of educated speculations regarding the afterlife, psychic phenomena, and other related subjects.”

We will be reading and discussing this book into November 2024.  For more information contact John Clark at alvinjclark@aol.com.
