Opportunities to serve at the WEST VIEW HUB
The HUB recently completed the addition of a new space beside the existing center. This new space opens up plenty of opportunities for Northmont to serve the needs of our neighboring community of West View. Volunteers are needed for the existing programs, such as the twice weekly food pantry, and about eight other programs serving youth up through the elderly. The programs are listed on their excellent website. On Facebook just look up: West View Hub.
The new space is an open room for creative efforts in the arts and indoor recreation for all ages. It also features a sound room which we are invited to use for recording music.
The months of January and February are an excellent time for volunteering your talents to start a new program in an area that you are willing want to explore. If you let them know what you want to do, they will promote it, provide the space, time, and volunteers.

A New Thing I’m Up To:
From January to March, I will be taking an online course with the goal of receiving an Executive Certificate in Religious Fundraising. This program, offered through an organization called the Lake Institute, will give me tools and resources to better equip myself and the church to do some outreach-focused fundraising.
Update:
So I am now through 3 of the 8 weeks, and I must say I am very impressed. The teachers and staff are excellent and I feel like I am learning a lot, not only from them but from the others in the class.
I’m beginning work on my “class project”- so stay tuned for some more info on that soon 😁

| Hymn of the Month - Update |
January finds us exploring a new tune, RENDEZ À DIEU, which can be sung with several terrific texts. So far we have sung it to the hymn, When John Baptized by Jordan’s River and New Songs of Celebration Render. This week we’ll use it twice in the service for two beautiful communion texts.
The first, found in our hymnal, is Bread of the World in Mercy Broken was written by Anglican bishop, Reginald Heber (1783-1826). Heber was a prize-winning poet, and died as bishop of Calcutta, where he baptized the first native-born Christian. This short hymn of only one stanza is small but mighty; it is sung around the world. Heber’s other hymns in The Presbyterian Hymnal are great favorites: Holy, Holy, Holy and Brightest and Best of the Stars of the Morning.

Sunday is the first of the month. During communion the choir will sing Glenn Rudolph’s setting of the ancient text, Jesus, the very thought of thee. This familiar hymn is attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the so-called Doctors of the Church. “Doctor” in this case means “teacher” and refers to saints recognized as having made a significant contribution to theology or doctrine through their research, study, or writing. Glenn’s setting is lovely and I’m grateful that he introduced me to it.
In keeping with the communion theme, our introit is Ralph Vaughan Williams’ gem, O taste and see, which sets a line from Psalm 34. This beautiful motet was composed for Elizabeth II’s coronation and was sung at her funeral. Lent begins in a few weeks. In the meantime, we relax and bask in the light of Christ.
And, finally, as we enter Black History Month, we will sing Larry Fleming’s gorgeous setting of the Spiritual, Give me Jesus. This Spiritual was probably not original to the enslaved, but Black Christians embraced it and are largely responsible for its current form. Larry Fleming (1936-2003), founder and long-time music director of the National Lutheran Choir, was a noted conductor and composer of both choral and instrumental music.
