The State of Minnesota and DEED Create Small Business Emergency Grant Program

On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, Governor Tim Walz signed into law the Small Business Emergency Grant program. The Department of Employment and Economic Development, Minnesota Senate, and House partnered together to create a $62.5 million program which was from the Federal CARES ACT. This program will provide $10,000 grants to small businesses that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses with 50 or fewer full-time employees are eligible. Half of the funding will go to businesses in Greater Minnesota and half to businesses in the seven-county Twin Cities metro area, as required by law.

Additional requirements include:
  • $18 million for businesses with six or fewer full-time employees
  • $10 million for minority business enterprises
  • $2.5 million for veteran-owned businesses
  • $2.5 million for women-owned businesses
  • $2.5 million for operators of indoor retail and food markets with an ethnic cultural emphasis

The application period will begin on Tuesday, June 23 and close at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 2 to fulfill the 10-day period required by the law. A randomized, computer-generated lottery process will be used to select eligible businesses that will receive awards. All awards will be administered by qualified local and regionally based nonprofit agencies, and the grant funds can be used for working capital to support payroll expenses, rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, and other similar business expenses.

To be eligible, businesses must have a permanent physical location in Minnesota and be majority owned by a permanent resident of Minnesota. Businesses must be able to demonstrate hardship as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Additional eligibility requirements and application information can be found online at DEED’s  Small Business Relief Grants   webpage
DEED Creates Stay Safe Preparedness Template for Business Reopening

Minnesota has begun the process of safely reopening. As we return to work and activities we enjoy, we have a shared responsibility to look out for each other and save lives. Together, as One Minnesota, we will implement our Stay Safe Plan, make data-driven decisions and stay ahead of COVID-19. DEED, in partnership with DLI, created a template for preparedness plans. Every business now needs one, including critical sectors. Helpful guides. This coincides with CDC and MDH guidelines and to provide clarity for both workers and customers.

Minnesota Zoo launches drive-through to see animals during pandemic

The Minnesota Zoo has launched a new drive-through experience, Beastly Boulevard, for people to see animals while supporting the zoo during the pandemic.  Beastly Boulevard will serve as a critical fundraiser for the zoo, which is running out of money due to the pandemic.

Tickets go on sale Friday for the experience, which will run from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM from June 24-July 5. It's $25 per vehicle for members of the zoo and $50 per vehicle for non-members. Its a limited event, with 500 vehicles per day allowed to drive on the walking paths of the zoo through a portion of the Northern Trail and Wells Fargo Family Farm, where visitors will be able to gaze from their vehicles at takin, bison, prairie dogs, pronghorn, Asian wild horses, camels, dholes, llamas, horses, cows and goats.

During the drive, which takes about 20-30 minutes, zoo-goers can follow along on the tour with an education booklet and sing along to an animal-themed playlist on Spotify, titled  MN Zoo’s Beastly Boulevard Playlist.
