2021 Legislative Session Comes to an End, But Policy Issues Still Loom in Special Session
On Monday, May 17, Governor Tim Walz and legislative leaders announced that they had reached a deal on a bipartisan budget. The budget agreement is for the fiscal year 2022-2023 budget. It will cover the two-year period beginning July 1, 2021, and ending June 30, 2023.

Deadlines have been set for the working committee to wrap up exact dollar amounts by May 28 and final language by June 4. The total two-year budget is roughly $51 billion, a combination of state and one-time federal stimulus money.

While the regular legislative session has adjourned, there is still a lot of work to be done. House and Senate working groups – informal conference committees, will begin meeting to continue working out the differences in budget bills on matters of both finance and policy. Since the Legislature is not technically in session, they do not have official bills to work from, but they will use the legislation passed during the regular session. We can expect a the first special session of 2021 to convene on June 14th if not sooner.

You can learn more about the policy decisions that need to be made at our June Public Affairs Webinar on Friday, June 4 from 8:00-9:00 AM. Join the DCR Chamber of Commerce and Dakota County Legislative Delegation members as we discuss the policy obstacles in the way of ending the special session.
