Fuelling Our Business Community

It was another great week at the Chamber! We started out the week with a lunch time Budget Roundtable presented by the Honourable Travis Toews, Minister of Finance. While we might be facing some challenging economic obstacles, the Chamber believes that Medicine Hat & District is uniquely positioned to capitalize on opportunities in agriculture, energy and innovation. We are determined to fulfill our mission of stimulating a strengthened and vibrant economy through our connections, support and influence.
We also hosted a Export Session facilitated by EDC and found out how our members can access federal supports to grow their business. It was a very informative session and we would encourage members to find out how EDC has expanded their tools to extend to businesses along the supply chain.
We also conducted our semi-annual meeting with Michaela Glasgo, MLA for Brooks-Medicine Hat and Drew Barnes, MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat. We appreciate having our provincial elected representatives take the time to meet with the Directors on our Executive Committee to discuss our various priorities and to ensure that we have open lines of communication. These meetings allow us to advocate, in person, to government and explore ways in which we can work together to promote our region and bring opportunities and investment to SE Alberta.
Finally, we were super excited to meet Mayor-for-the-day, Theo, who took time out of his busy schedule to visit the Chamber. Under the tutelage of His Worship, Ted Clugston, Theo took our big scissors and expertly showed how a ribbon can and should be cut. We listened intently to his campaign promises and will be intently watching to see if he delivers on his promise of a Chuck E. Cheese!

On March 10, 2020, the Chamber learned from Air Canada representatives that the airline would be discontinuing service in Medicine Hat indefinitely as of April 1st. There were multiple factors impacting the decision, including the switch to the Beechcraft, the added competition, the economic impacts and the current situation with COVID-19.

Let’s say you work in a grocery store and your job is to sort the apples from the bananas. You say to your boss, does this seem like the highest and best use of my time? Your boss says, you’re right, it’s time to use a machine to sort the apples from the bananas and move you to a job more worthy of your skill set.
The machine arrives and has never seen an apple or a banana before, how do you teach it to differentiate between the two? Well, first you give it some parameters, like colour, the closer to yellow the object is, it’s a banana, the closer to red, it’s an apple. We could try to only give it one criterion, but better to provide more information, so we also tell the machine if it’s hard, it’s an apple, if it’s soft, it’s a banana. To keep it simple, we’ll only give it these two clues.

Opening March 16, 2020!
We will be structured as a family, locally operated fast-food, drive-thru logistically, with in-seating for about 30 people. But we are not the traditional “fast-food” operation. 80 % of our menu is in-house made including Ukrainian fare of in-house pinched perogies, in-house stuffed cabbage rolls, borscht, charbroiled burgers and smokies and our feature item with a secret recipe: home-style pressure fried chicken -thus the name BABA CLUCK and the “Comfort Eats” branding.
