On Part II of this special edition of State of the Arts, we meet five New Jersey Heritage Fellowship winners: Afro-Peruvian cajón player Hector Morales; African-American storyteller Queen Nur; a master of Korean dance, Lena Mija Kim; and percussionist Juan Cartagena and dancer Nanette Hernández—the husband/wife duo’s passion for social justice is expressed through their practice of Puerto Rican Bomba y Plena.

A Month of Music

This month, we're sharing live music previously featured on State of the Arts!


We caught up with the popular, one-of-a-kind, retro, band Pink Martini at a Bergen Performing Arts Center appearance. A perennial favorite with the NPR crowd, they had the sold out audience dancing in the aisles. Founder and bandleader Thomas Lauderdale explains how the band got started in Portland, Oregon in 1994. Lead singer China Forbes introduces some of the band’s best known songs. Watch here.

At Rowan University, ceramic artist Syd Carpenter and sculptor Jack Larimore connect the campus to its Pine Barrens surroundings with Batsto Homestead, an evocative work of public art created for new Chamberlain Student Center.

Legendary English singer, songwriter, and virtuosic guitarist Richard Thompson brought his wide-ranging collection of powerful songs to the Tabernacle, a 19th century church space in Mt. Tabor, New Jersey that’s become an intimate music venue cherished by performers and audiences alike.
