Over 100 Eastside business leaders convened on July 26 for the first ever Port Unplugged Eastside event to chat with Port Commissioner Courtney Gregoire regarding economic development opportunities and make businesses connections. Reminder: Public Affairs Closed for the Summer
We’re taking August off from formal Public Affairs meetings. However, there is plenty going on in the world of business advocacy.

Bellevue Chamber leadership is hard at work, scrutinizing statewide ballot measures such as Initiative 1631, relating to carbon fees and I-1634, preempting additional local taxes on groceries. And we’re keeping watch for the arrival of the Bellevue City Manager’s proposed 2019-20 budget.

Your Voice Matters
Bellevue Chamber and Downtown Association Provide Budget Input

The Bellevue Council held the second city budget hearing of the year earlier this week and your business representatives were on hand to propose guiding principles. Our joint budget task force urges Council to adopt a maintenance level operating budget for existing programs. Any new revenues should first be allocated to staffing Fire Station Ten, as approved by the voters and covering unfunded Law Enforcement Officers and Fire Fighters (LEOFF) pension liabilities.

Medical Breakthroughs You Should Know About
At the 2018 Eastside Leadership Conference, UW researcher Dr. Beno Freedman wowed the audience when he spoke about making breakthroughs in growing mini kidneys. They hope to one day manufacture kidneys that won’t be rejected by a recipient’s body because they’ll be generated from the recipient’s own stem cells.
