All Saints is a feast day that musicians love because there are great hymns and anthems that celebrate the lives of those who have gone before us. For the last couple of years Chancel Choir has presented Requiems with orchestra in the context of the worship service. This year, we’ve pared things down a bit, so that we can focus on music for the upcoming musical needs of the 100th-anniversary year.
Nonetheless, we’ll be singing some truly great music for the occasion, all of which is taken directly from the words of scripture.
-
The introit is a charming acapella setting of the words from Revelation 14:4 that describes the redeemed, These are they which follow the Lamb, as set by English Romantic, John Goss.
-
The offertory is Johannes Brahms’s well-known setting of Psalm 84, How lovely is thy dwelling place, which is drawn from Ein deutsches Requiem. We hope to present this complete work next year. The title, “A German Requiem,” indicates that the work is not to be confused with a liturgical funeral Mass in Latin; rather, it is a compilation of biblical texts in German, which Brahms selected himself. As such, it is not intended specifically for use within the service, as those by Duruflé and Fauré are, but is usually heard in concert.
-
At communion the choir will sing the evocative setting of the first reading from Revelation: And I saw a new heaven. Written by the English-born, Australian composer, Edgar Bainton, this anthem is regarded as a masterpiece of the choral repertoire. It is Bainton’s most famous work.
On top of this choral feast, we will join in singing some great hymns, and we will name those who have died in the past year. We pray that these musical offerings will be a blessing to you and particularly to those who mourn.

NORTHMONT DEACONS’ ANGEL TREE is set up in the foyer by the main entrance from the parking lot, beginning this Sunday. You can help give a proper Christmas to those less fortunate by choosing gift tags from the Angel Tree. Gifts may be brought to the church between Nov. 3 and Dec.1. Please put gift cards in the wrapped shoebox in the church office; place other items (unwrapped) in a special box in the church library. Last year’s North Hills Community Outreach Toy Drive delivered toys, games, and other gifts to 821 children for the holidays. Northmont has always been a generous church. We pray our efforts will be fruitful again this year in assisting needy families in our community.
