With over 100 guests in attendance, the Winter Wonderland Holiday benefit was a great success! We thank our 20 sponsors for supporting this event and making this year the best yet! Guests enjoyed delectable desserts, great holiday jazz music, raffles and over 20 silent auction items to bid from. There were many local vendors who donated items to our silent auction and a few residents from the houses donated "one-of-a-kind" knitted scarves and sweaters that were a huge hit!

Thank you to everyone who donated and volunteered to make this holiday benefit an event to remember!

ART EXHIBITION

"Generation to Generation"
Hunters Woods Fellowship House partnered with South Lakes High School to create an art gallery in the newly renovated hallway space. Student curators Lena Marie Oschmann and Renee Cummings worked alongside their art teacher Mr. M. Rando, to showcase its first art exhibition ‘Generation to Generation.’ Both residents and art students submitted artwork that will be displayed from December to March. Residents are excited to see artwork from people of different backgrounds and ages in the exhibition.

Thank you to our partners at South Lakes High School in Reston, VA for their participation!

Lake Ridge Fellowship House

During the month of December, Lake Ridge Residents learned about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time every year.

At right, Christine L. models her depression light for SAD Awareness month. SAD lamps simulate sunlight which helps trigger the brain to release serotonin, often called the feel-good hormone.

CHRISTY'S CORNER
Building and Rebuilding
This month is one of my favorite times of the year and I’m so pleased to reflect on all that we have accomplished in 2022. And I appreciate all the smiles and thanks I’ve received from Fellowship House residents.

If you’ve followed our story this year, you know that we completed two major projects – the $86M state-of-the-art Lake Anne House and the $26M renovation of Hunters Woods Fellowship House. Each of these projects would have been a once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment and Fellowship Square is so pleased to have successfully completed both!

While housing is our core mission and has been since our founding in 1960, we have invested much time and resources into programs and services that the residents rely on for a happy life.

This year, many new partners, donors and volunteers helped us deliver necessities like groceries, meals, transportation to doctor’s appointments and important health services for residents. We intend to continue to be the safety net for our residents and look to expanding our health and wellness services in the coming year.

If you haven’t yet taken the step to be counted among our generous donors and supporters, I encourage you to get involved with us in 2023. Everyone can do something – and that includes you!

If you are a supporter, I cannot express how grateful I am for your involvement. Our mission is only successful when everyone plays a part. No matter how big or how small your part has been, you’ve gotten us where we are today.

Thank you to each person seeing this message today. I wish you all the success in 2023!

With gratitude,
Christy Zeitz

AWARDS AND HONORS
SL Nusbaum Recognizes Outstanding Property Management Staff
Staff from our property management company, SL Nusbaum, were recognized in an annual award ceremony in Norfolk, VA. Regional managers nominate staff who have gone "above and beyond" to help their residents and to acknowledge teams for their hard work and dedication to their respective communities.

Cristian Mata from Lake Anne House received the "Service Employee of the Year" award in the Northern region area. Cristian has been at the Lake Anne community for 22 years! Prior to the moving to the new building, he manned the old 240-unit building alone for about a month, remaining on-call with no assistance, and no complaints. The Lake Anne House staff is honored to have him as a part of the team, and they know it will be hard to replace him when he decides to retire.
Phap Nguyen from Hunters Woods Fellowship House received the "Service Manager of the Year" award in the Northern region area. Phap earned this award due to hard work and diligence during the current two-year multi-million-dollar rehabilitation project. Phap is a dedicated and trusted member of the Hunters Woods team!

Grace Foster
Service Coordinator, Largo Landing Fellowship House

Grace Foster resides in Baltimore, MD but is originally from Barbados in the Caribbean. She moved from the Caribbean to New York, where most of her family still resides and has also lived in New Jersey. She has a degree in social work, human services and a minor in sociology. Early on, she worked as a paralegal then promoted to Manager of Records at Farer Fersko Law in New Jersey for a number of years until finding her real passion in working with seniors. She then decided to reeducate herself by pursuing a degree in social work in 2017.

Upon graduation, Grace completed internships at nursing homes and volunteered at the Veteran's Association. One assignment was to visit every resident on a daily basis, obtain assessments, goals and develop solutions by working closely with staff. After the internship ended, she continued to visit the residents because they grown close and enjoyed keeping the connection.

Grace went on to work for multiple companies, including Volunteers of America - halfway house. During this time, she was responsible for acclimating prisoners into society using community resources, and independently carried a case load of 60 residents. Some assignments were to help the prisoners obtain identification, medical coverage, housing, and more. Grace was empathetic to the elderly, who had lost connection with family members, who had been incarcerated for several years.

She is now an empty nester, who has successfully raised two college graduates, has now turned the kids' room into an office, and is fervently pursuing her passion.
