CLEAN, CLEAR, AND OPEN

Make sure your fireplace and chimney are in good working order before starting a fire. Have the chimney cleaned yearly. The firebox should be free of ashes. The damper needs to be open before lighting anything. Cracking a window a little bit helps oxygen flow in the room. If you have fireplace doors, keep them open while the fire is actively burning to safely maximize heat. Always proactively use

a fireplace screen.

GOOD WOOD = GOOD FIRE

DRY, CLEAN FUEL = YOUR BEST TOOL

Using the proper fuel in your fireplace is crucial. Burn only simple stuff. Items such as glossy wrapping paper, shiny bows, and foam peanuts release toxic fumes. Choose the right wood that is local and seasoned. Oak and other hardwoods generally burn long and hot. Use only a couple of logs at a time and aim for a slow, steady burn. Avoid using wet, rotten, or moldy wood. Properly store your wood in a dry place.

6 SAFETY TIPS

  1. Never use gasoline, kerosene, or charcoal starters. Fire + chemical DO NOT MIX!
  2. Never leave a fire unattended. Pay attention to embers and regularly tend all burning material to ensure that no large pieces fall away from the central grate.
  3. Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors on each level of the house are a fireplace safety must-have. Regularly test and change batteries.
  4. Don't position your Christmas tree, or anything else such as drapes, near the fireplace. **That includes hanging items from the mantel.** There should be 12+ inches of clearance between the top of the firebox and any combustible materials.
  5. Use flame retardant hearth rugs and keep furniture at least 3 feet from an active fire.
  6. Have a fire extinguisher handy near the fireplace, just in case. A single spark can start a blaze, so it's always best to be prepared.

From our family to yours,

have a safe and joyous holiday season!
