N EW EDITORIAL
BY GORDON NEUFELD, PH.D.

Spoiler alert – This may make you cry. I would advise against reading if you are still under the age of 35, your middle name is 'merry', or your Santa Claus is coming.

It's the time of year again when I yearn for the most melancholy music I can find. As I'm writing this, I'm listening to some achingly beautiful choral music that seems to be the perfect playground to some sadness deep within that I didn't even know existed and I certainly have no words for. I can sense that it is truly  my sadness that is surfacing, not just borrowed emotion from the music I am listening to, but I cannot not tell you from where it originates.

This mood certainly seems somewhat incongruous with the emotional expectations of the season. Isn't this supposed to be a season of joy, happiness and fulfillment? Our greetings at this time of year certainly reveal our emotional agenda - Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukah, Happy New Year. However, it's likely that we wouldn't be wishing this for each other unless the opposite was more likely to be the case … and for good reason it would seem.

We have come to associate this season with warm family connection, a generosity of spirit, magic and awe, feasting and fulfillment. Our hopes and expectations automatically highlight any lack there may be. With years, these losses accumulate. Warm childhood memories of celebration and connectedness are not easily re-enacted and when they are, the ... READ THE REST OF GORDON'S EDITORIAL →

Intensive III: Becoming Attached  unfolds and expands the six roots of attachment and puts the focus more on adults than in the first two Intensive levels. The course is also a journey through Dr. Neufeld's earlier theoretical development, which created the puzzle pieces that ultimately came together in the six roots of attachment. The Intensive III is designed not only to provide deeper theoretical understanding but also to give the opportunity for more personal integration of the material.

The prerequisites for this course are Neufeld Intensive I and Intensive II .
Sidney BC 1
Becoming Attached  is offered occasionally as a destination learning opportunity which includes all fifteen sessions taught in-person by Dr. Neufeld over five days. Sessions are taught from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm to allow participants to spend time with their families, or to utilize the time for reflection and contemplation.

The course will be held in Sidney, BC, a beautiful oceanside community just a short drive from the ferry terminal and Victoria International Airport. There are plenty of nearby activities and accommodation options to suit the whole family. Stay tuned for all of the details in our January newsletter!

10:00 – 11:30 AM PACIFIC

Why can kids act caring one minute only to erupt in aggression in another? What are we to do when they lack caring or hurt others? We want to cultivate empathy in our kids but how can we do this without using artificial, and often detrimental measures like rewards, praise, or punishment to get there? Using the children’s picture book The Sorry Plane , Deborah MacNamara will examine the developmental science behind caring and empathy and discuss how to grow kids who care.
The Sorry Plane , written by Deborah MacNamara and illustrated by Zoe Si,   is the first book to display the  Neufeld Institute Recommended Seal . The initiative, established in 2019, recognizes children’s literature that is congruent with developmental science as well as with the relational-developmental approach articulated by Dr. Gordon Neufeld at the Neufeld Institute.
