"To the Buffalo People": Rare art offering/Bill Worrell, from September 11th, 2001

Great Plains Restoration Council is offering a few of its legacy art holdings for sale, the first of which is here.

20 years ago, on September 10 & 11th, 2001, the renowned Southwest artist Bill Worrell created this large sand/acrylic canvas painting "To the Buffalo People" as a donation to GPRC for an art fundraiser that our new organization was hosting in Santa Fe. Then September 11th happened.

"To the Buffalo People" is being offered for $15,000, plus shipping, which will support our non-profit work to help people and wildlife on the Great Plains and beyond.

"To the Buffalo People" has been in protected storage since 2001, is in vibrant, excellent condition, and continues to increase in value.

This beautiful, one-of-its-kind art investment will eventually be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

With the wooden pole, it is 57" by 37" and the canvas itself is 46" W x 34".

As stated in U.S. News & World Report: Art is a physical asset that "can occupy an important space in your portfolio, serving as a hedge against inflation, adding diversification and reducing your portfolio's volatility. ...Unlike equities, which are sensitive to market movements, the art market has steadily grown over the years, and traditional physical fine art tends to maintain or increase its value over time."

Bill Worrell, who was featured in galleries across the Southwest, passed away in May at the age of 85.

You can read a tribute to Bill's life in the Santa Fe New Mexican tribute and in Texas Highways.

Earlier in life, he was awestruck and artistically inspired by Indigenous rock art he encountered as he sought shelter in a cave during a thunderstorm and flood on the Pecos River.

In addition to the vibrant painting on the front of this canvas, Bill also wrote an extensive poem on the back, the last stanza of which is excerpted below.

Before we consign it with an art gallery, which takes a sizable commission up to 50%, we are offering it first for sale here. Please share this announcement.

With his hand-written poem on the back from September 11th, 2001, and its call for humanity, this is a painting by the renowned artist Bill Worrell that exists nowhere else in the world.

Last stanza from back of "To the Buffalo People":
"We have all misunderstood,
Thinking the Oceans and Seas and Rivers are boundaries
Separating humanity from humanity.
How we do err!
The Sky has always connected us,
As has the Earth beneath the Waters.
It was the same Great Spirit who made us all,
Not four different Spirits of four different colors.
Each Person of all these colors must come to know
That his and her personal rights end at the place where such privileges injure other human beings
And intrude upon the inalienable rights of all people."

"There is great sorrow in the world today.
The World Trade Center was destroyed.
Other planes were bombed.
We must stop sleeping."
