Unconscious Gender Biases and Discrimination Lead to Suboptimal Care for Women
A new report commissioned for the medical journal The Lancet is championing a fresh approach to women’s cancer treatment that keeps gender equality top of mind and could save countless lives.
The analysis, titled “Women, power, and cancer,” found that of the 2.3 million women worldwide who die prematurely (under age 70) from cancer each year, 1.5 million could be saved “through the elimination of exposures to key risk factors or via early detection and diagnosis,” per a press release. An additional 800,000 deaths could be prevented if all women had access to optimal cancer care.
The authors suggest that many of the barriers to such care have to do with systemic sexism. For example, in the “cancer workforce,” women make up the majority of unpaid caregivers and are underrepresented as leaders in research and policy organizations. Women are also more likely to prioritize the needs of family over their own, and therefore often delay seeking health care when it’s needed.
“The impact of a patriarchal society on women’s experiences of cancer has gone largely unrecognized,” said the report’s co-chair Ophira Ginsburg, adding: “To address this, we need cancer to be seen as a priority issue in women’s health, and call for the immediate introduction of a feminist approach to cancer.”

Consumers Are Voicing Concerns About AI
Over the last several years, artificial intelligence (AI)—a term which can refer to a broad variety of technologies, as a previous FTC blog notes—has attracted an enormous amount of market and media attention. That’s in part because the potential of AI is exciting: there are opportunities for public progress by enhancing human capacity to integrate, analyze, and leverage information.

Always look for the MQSA certificate at the mammography facility, which is required to be displayed and indicates that the facility meets the national baseline standards for mammography.

Labor Share of Net Income is Within Its Historical Range | As increased political attention focuses on the state of the American worker, expect to see a resurgence of the argument that the labor share of income is in decline. The problem with the argument is that it ignores that some categories counted as income in national accounting statistics don’t actually end up in the pockets of workers or capital owners. Removing the categories of income that are not actually income reveals that labor and capital shares are well within their historical range. | |
